3.26.87 Today is my holiday, for those who know me, I don’t even celebrate my birthday so you know today is special. In 2014, the sneaker community decided to mark March 26th as Air Max Day where we celebrate ALL THINGS AIR MAX. Notably, this being the 35th Anniversary of Tinker Hatfield’s most notable contribution to the sneaker world, I wanted to express why this shoe is so important to me…
Growing up an 80’s baby, I come from an era of YO! MTV Raps, The Box, Hip Hop, and strict parentals who frequently dropped the common phrase “I ain’t spending no $100 for some shoes” (maybe that was just my house). As a product of a single mother and inner city upbringing, I had a great childhood. Growing up in the hood was actually a great experience, I got to see MY people in OUR element, different hues and accents, to me it was beautiful. Me not having access or affording certain luxuries, didn’t affect my childhood in a negative way. I liked my PRO Keds too, and I was mature enough to know, we just can’t get it now. I never stewed in it, I just knew when I could, I would go get it myself.
As we get older and we become about different things, we’re supposed to relinquish “the poor person’s mentality”, be fiscally responsible and invest in things that make money for you. Welp, I do/have done that too, but I believe in self-care and treating yourself to what brings you joy.
Sneakers, specifically the Air Max 1’s offer the nostalgia from my era, the innovative technology, the endless amount of flavors, max comfort, no matter my age, you’ll forever see me in a pair of AM 1’s, if you know me, you know this is my drug of choice. Over 20 years of collecting, and over 75 pairs of Air Max’s (not all pictured 😉), The Nike Air Max 1 is my dad shoe that is consistent. It represents my humble beginnings, simple while simultaneously keeping me fresh in today’s times. In the past 12 months, we’ve been blessed with some monster AM1 drops, and I’m so excited about what’s to come. It’s a hobby I share with my kids, and this shoe has lasted the test of time over 35 years. Today I pay homage to the classic legendary shoe, the Nike Air Max 1, Happy Air Max Day!
