Per Wayne County Fire District Chief, Steve Lutz:

On May 18, 2026, The Wayne County Commission voted to implement Stage 2 fire restrictions.

As of May 19th, open fires of any kind are prohibited in addition to the following activities:

• Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire including charcoal grills, pellet grills, or ash producing fuels.

• Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle, trailer, or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area that is paved or free from any vegetation.

• Discharging or using any fireworks, tracer ammunition, or other pyrotechnic devices, including exploding targets.

• Cutting, welding, or grinding metal in areas of dry vegetation.

• Operating a motorcycle, chainsaw, ATV, or other small internal combustion engine without an approved and working spark arrestor.

• The only open fires allowed within Wayne County, at this time, are propane stoves (or firepits) that can be turned off at a valve or switch.

The restricted area includes all mountains, canyons, parks, and campgrounds throughout Wayne County. The County Fire Warden may grant exceptions for burns that directly affect someone’s ability to make a living.

A fire allowed under an exception will require increased resources to contain the fire. This likely will include having a fire crew standing by, at the permittee’s expense.

Violations of this Fire Restriction Order are a Class C Misdemeanor in violation of UTAH CODE SECTION 64A-8-211.

Questions regarding these fire restrictions may be directed to the Wayne County Fire Officials at (801) 376-2027 or (435) 588-5570.

A Huge Thank You to All First Responders of the Monroe Fire

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all the first responders who stepped up to battle the Monroe Fire. Your dedication, courage, and tireless efforts have made a tremendous difference in protecting lives, homes, and communities.

Wayne County was among the departments called up for the initial attack and structure protection, and we couldn’t be prouder of the incredible job they did. From the moment they arrived, their professionalism and determination were evident. The teamwork on the ground — from Wayne County and every department involved — was nothing short of outstanding.

To every firefighter, EMT, law enforcement officer, dispatcher, and support crew: thank you. Your hard work doesn't go unnoticed, and our communities are safer because of you.

Stay safe, and know how much you're appreciated. 👏🔥🚒

The Wayne County Fire District will once again be offering a free branch and tree chipping
program this September 8 th -11 th for property owners wishing to reduce their fire risk in the
Wildland Urban Interface. A State Forestry crew will be available to reduce property owners
hazard by making their Wildland Urban Interface land more fire resilient. By removing branches
lower than 4-5 ft and removing flammable brush that can allow fire to climb from the ground
into the crowns of trees you will be helping to prevent catastrophic fire that could destroy your
property and your neighbors. Also keep any flammables at all at least 5 ft from buildings,
remove dead trees and brush at least 30 ft away, better yet within 100 ft and reduce any
flammable material along driveways and roads so you can get out and we can get in and out
safely.
Lengths of branches or trees can be up to 10 feet long and up to 10 inches in diameter, as long
as a couple of crew members can feed them into the chipper. Piles must be placed
perpendicular to a road or driveway with the thicker end pointed toward the access. Brush can
NOT be chipped. Roots, rocks and dirt can ruin the chipper so none of those please! To get on
the chipping list, email [email protected] with your name, address, phone, the amount of
time it takes you to do your fuel reduction work, and a brief description of your material to be
chipped. GPS coordinates are helpful also. We will leave you the chip pile for mulch or other
purposes. Please make your reservation by September 2. If you do not give us all the
information that we request, you will not be put on the list! We need all of that information,
please.
If you think that untrimmed trees and flammable materials near your buildings are going to be
ok without your work, you are sadly mistaken. Look no further than the Monroe Canyon fire.
For almost 10 years Utah State Forestry, the US Forest Service, BLM and private partners
planned and executed a fuel reduction program on public and private land on Monroe
Mountain to help protect private and public resources. Many of the houses that have been
saved were defensible because of all the work that was done. The previous prescribed burns
have also made fighting that catastrophic fire more successful where heavy fuels have been
eliminated. 1,500 firefighters have used those fuel breaks to construct fire lines and protect
homes and open areas.
Wayne County Fire crews have been deployed several times for structure protection and we all
should be very grateful to them and the other crews working in extremely dangerous
conditions. These conditions are the worst scenario in more than 86 years. Drought, low
humidity and strong winds make for a perfect storm of risk. Please do your part to keep Wayne
County safe. Follow fire restrictions, spread the word and pray for rain! Go to
