Welcome to our second installment of Station Pride Saturday! Today we are moving over to Battalion 7 and taking a look at OCFA Fire Station #9, located in Mission Viejo. Although certainly not one OCFA’s oldest stations, Station 9 has been around over 50 years having first opened in 1974 as the second Mission Viejo fire station in the old Orange County Fire Department.

Fire Station 9’s district contains over 30,000 residents and is made up of a diverse mix of commercial and residential areas, a stretch of the Interstate 5 freeway corridor, and wildland urban interface areas. The district also contains some unique target hazards; the crews at Station 9 have the opportunity to serve Saddleback College, The Shops at Mission Viejo, The Kaleidoscope Center, Mission Hospital, and several senior living & assisted care facilities.

The interior of Fire Station 9, like many of our stations, reflects traditions established long ago by the station’s assigned crew members. To this day, the station features imagery from playing cards, inspired by card games the firefighters used to play during downtime over the last few decades. Family visits were (and still are) very common, as indicated by the wall featuring the heights of firefighters’ children who have visited over the years.

Station 9 currently houses Engine 9 and an OES Type VI Engine. For many years, Station 9 was also home to Truck 9, but Truck 9 was recently relocated to Station 24 (which will be featured at some point in the future!).

The crews from station 45 conducted aerial ladder training in the city of Rancho Santa Margarita. This 100’ ladder is driven by 2 people, an Engineer and a firefighter in the back. The ladder can be used for roof access, rescue operations and can flow up to 1000 gallons per minute of flowing water on a fire.

Engine crews from Battalion 7 worked with our wildland firefighting crews to maintain fire access roads around the communities of Coto de Caza, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Wagon Wheel. Fire roads ensure quick access for fire equipment and crews. They also act as fuel breaks to help slow down wildfires.

Earlier this week Engine 45 and Truck 45 visited a community event hosted by nonprofit organization Amayzing Kids. The kids enjoyed checking out the engine and truck, asked the firefighters questions, and got a demonstration of a firefighter putting on his turnout gear 🚒

Both the kids and the crew enjoyed a refreshing ice cream together in the heat! 🍦

Thank you Amayzing Kids for hosting this event!

Coming soon to OCFA Division 3, a brand new series taking a closer look at the fire stations in Division 3 cities and some of the elements that make them unique! New Station Pride Saturday posts will come out every few weeks, so stay tuned!

Fire stations tend to be unique reflections not only of the crews who work and live in them, but also of the communities they serve. Every station is different and features little bits of tradition and symbolism that help elevate the station from a simple workplace into a home and staple of the community.

This series will look at several of the Division 3 stations and showcase interesting elements of tradition and station pride, as well as look at the historical role our stations have played in South OC cities and unincorporated areas.

What station do YOU want to see? Any guesses which station will be featured first?? Clue: it is one of the oldest OCFA stations in the entire county!
