🚨 WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN HIRING A ROOFER

This one is important.

A homeowner recently contacted Reliable Roofing & Siding after having a metal roof installed on her home earlier this year.

The installer described the material as “pole barn metal.”

Now, let’s be clear, metal roofing itself is not the problem. There are properly designed and manufactured metal roofing systems for residential homes.

The problem is when a roofing system is installed without the proper knowledge of the building, the roof deck, the penetrations, the flashing, the ventilation and the manufacturer's installation requirements.

In this case, the homeowner is already experiencing water coming through the roof when it rains.

And unfortunately, she's now in the position of having to pay another roofing contractor to figure out what was done, remove the existing material, repair the underlying damage and install a roofing system that can be properly documented and warranted.

💡 Here's what we want homeowners to know:

Before you hire someone to put a roof over your head, ask:

✔️ Are you licensed for residential roofing work in Michigan?

✔️ Are you insured?

✔️ What roofing system are you installing?

✔️ Is that specific product approved for my type of roof and roof deck?

✔️ How will the vents, chimneys, plumbing penetrations and other roof penetrations be flashed?

✔️ What manufacturer installation instructions are being followed?

✔️ What warranty am I actually receiving?

✔️ Can I get all of that in writing?

And don't be afraid to ask for the contractor's license number and verify it.

Michigan LARA specifically recommends that homeowners verify a contractor's licensing before hiring them.

A roof is not the place to learn that the cheapest estimate wasn't actually the cheapest option.

We're currently helping this homeowner get the documentation she needs, evaluate what was installed, and develop a plan to correct the problem properly.

💙 COMMUNITY BENEFIT FOR RYAN ROYSTON — AUGUST 22nd 💙

A few weeks ago, our friend and neighbor Ryan Royston was involved in a tragic accident, and he is facing a long road to recovery. Ryan is a husband, a father to four young children, and someone who means a lot to this community.

A few local businesses have already stepped up to help us put together a benefit for Ryan and his family, and we’d love to see even more get involved. When a family is hurting, this community always finds a way to show up.

Join us on August 22nd from 11 AM to 2 PM at Reliable Roofing & Siding for food, family games, and a silent auction — all to support Ryan’s recovery.

If you’d like to donate an item for the silent auction, you can drop it off Monday–Friday, 9–5, or call 231‑252‑2111 and we’ll meet you over the weekend.

Let’s come together and lift this family up. 💙
