Plan Ahead to Keep the Cold Weather from Creeping In

Keep your heating healthy – The biggest step you can make in the right direction is to keep your heating system running smoothly. Change your HVAC filters regularly to help it perform optimally. Also find a trusted furnace technician to tune up your home’s furnace. With your system in tip-top shape, it achieves manufacturer-rated efficiency.

Reverse your ceiling fans – No seriously, that’s it. By having your ceiling fans spin in the opposite direction, they’ll force the rising warm air downward to the part of the room you live in.

Seal the deal – The easiest way to add a cherry on top to all this prep? Making sure the heat stays in rather than escaping out. Seal air leaks with silicon caulk around windows, install weather-stripping where necessary, use window coverings to help trap heat in, and inspect the insulation in your attic and crawlspace to make sure it’s cozy!

Outside prep – Don’t forget to prep the outside of your house as well! Otherwise your home may wear down and let the cold in despite your best intentions. Check your roof before winter for any damaged shingles, clean your gutters to prevent the creation of ice dams, and mow your leaves to mulch your yard. Possibly the most important: turn off your exterior faucets! Drain your sprinkler system! No one likes dealing with a burst pipe.

Stock up to wait out the storm – in the case of a blizzard, you better have bought your supplies before hand. Food and water that doesn’t spoil, plenty of warm clothing, and snow shovels will all prove exceptionally handy in case you are snowed in for any period of time. You’d also be wise to get a transistor radio. And batteries. And back-up batteries. Batteries aren’t a sure thing; you’d rather be safe than sorry!
