These instructions also relate "student discourses" and "peer talk' to Scientific discourses and functional Number Sense abilities. However, and more importantly, 3D instructions utilize phenomena and discrepant events to uncover the cultural fund of knowledge any student brings to a learning environment.3D instructions help students to recognize and develop content and academic skills as a form of cultural accomplishment, thus assuring authenticity for their learning.

Students used different bucket designs to build a water wheel. Each design was tested for the time it took to lift 5 metal bolts 0.5 meters. They also had to determine the work done by the water wheel and it's power. ool
