Didn’t expect to become Portland’s unofficial skunk correspondent this week, but here we are. Grateful folks are paying attention to the humane way to handle wildlife — get them out, keep them out, no poison needed.

Skunks aren’t wandering into your yard by accident — they’re following food, shelter, and easy access. Grateful KGW News had me on to break down what actually draws them in: pet food left out, grubs in the lawn, and gaps under decks and sheds that make perfect dens.

At CRITTER DEFENSE PDX we handle it the humane way — no poison, just sealing them out for good.

PSA from under someone’s house today: go look at your dryer vent. This one was packed solid — which is both a fire risk and a five-star hotel for birds and rodents.

Cleaned it out while I was there, no charge. Two-minute check that could save you a very bad day.

🦨 Part 2 — how we got the skunk out for good. (Catch Part 1 first 👆)

No traps. We installed a one-way exclusion door over the entry — the skunk pushes out on its own next time it forages, but can’t get back in. No stress, no spray, no harm.

Then we sealed the spot with a heavy-duty critter barrier so nothing reopens it. Long-term fix — and the homeowner can use their front door again without a second thought. ✅

Hearing scratching or smelling something strange near your home? We’re here to help.
