As we approach the Year of the Horse on February 17th, many of our colleagues and partners in China will be heading into the Spring Festival holiday.

If you're wrapping up projects before the break or preparing to send well-wishes to your teams abroad, understanding these traditions can make all the difference in building meaningful connections!

Did you know that business success in China is deeply rooted in relationships?

In Chinese culture, the concept of “guanxi” refers to the powerful network of personal connections that helps people build trust, collaborate effectively, and navigate both professional and social life. Understanding guanxi is essential for anyone working with Chinese colleagues, partners, or clients.

Our cross-cultural training sessions are designed to help you explore these cultural dynamics in a practical and engaging way, giving you the tools to communicate more effectively, strengthen relationships, and avoid common misunderstandings.
If you would like to learn more about how relationship-oriented cultures like China shape the way people work and connect, we would be delighted to support you through our tailored cross-cultural training.

At Global LT, we help organizations bridge cultural gaps through expert cross-cultural training and language services. Learn more: https://hubs.li/Q041y2hw0

Most professionals want to communicate well with global colleagues. But intention doesn’t automatically translate into impact.

During a cross-cultural training training we did for a global manufacturing company working between the US and Germany, participants were introduced to cultural dimensions that shape communication styles, such as context, time orientation, hierarchy, and relationship-building.

Rather than guessing how others might interpret them, they learned:
• How culture influences expectations around clarity and detail
• Why “being direct” can feel respectful in one context and disruptive in another
• How English as a Second Language communication requires more than speaking slowly or simplifying language

The training provided language, models, and shared reference points that made these differences visible, and discussable.

That shared understanding is what allowed teams to adjust how they communicate in practice.

Global projects can struggle, even when everyone involved is capable and well-intentioned.

Usually, it's not about effort or expertise. It's about assumption.

We recently worked with a global manufacturing company coordinating between U.S. and German teams on a project with tight timelines. Both sides had strong people who genuinely wanted to succeed.

But they kept hitting friction points that were hard to name.
- One team's version of "communicating clearly" didn't match the other's
- Moving quickly felt responsible to some people, hasty to others
- When someone stayed quiet in a meeting, it meant different things depending on who you asked.

In a manufacturing environment, these things don’t stay small. They slow things down in ways that are hard to point to, and they make people question whether they can really trust the process.

What helped wasn’t simply getting people in the same room to talk. It was a structured cross-cultural training led by a professional facilitator, where teams
– Examined their own communication and decision-making styles
– Learned how cultural norms shape views on hierarchy, time, and feedback
– Practiced real scenarios from their actual projects
– Had language for why misunderstandings were happening—not just that they were.

Once they could see what was happening and why, they adjusted. Not overnight, but meaningfully.

This comes up a lot when you're working across countries or regions. Things function well enough that the cultural layer stays invisible. But it's often where the real friction lives.

If your cross-border work feels like it takes more energy than it should, it might be worth asking what’s going unsaid.

Every Global LT program traces back to a shared vision — one that began with our founder, Hortensia Albertini, and continues through leaders like Mary Beauregard.

We interviewed Mary to learn how our cultural training programs took shape, evolving from a passion for language into a mission to help people truly connect across borders and perspectives.

As one of the early champions of our culture initiatives, Mary helped turn Hortensia’s vision into practical, people-centered programs that empower global teams to communicate with confidence and understanding.

October is a special month for all of us at Global LT. 💙

Our late founder, Hortensia Albertini, was born on October 4th, and her belief that language and culture are the true heart of connection still drives us today.

All month long, we’ll be sharing stories, reflections, and resources that highlight how her vision continues to shape our training programs and global mission.

We’re beginning with this special article about Hortensia’s story and legacy — a reminder of how one person’s vision can continue to make an impact around the world: The Heart Behind Our Cultural Training: Carrying Forward Our Founder's Legacy https://hubs.li/Q03M0w9j0. 🌍✨

International mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have become a strategic tool for growth and expansion. However, the success of these deals hinges on effective integration, which is often hampered by cultural and language barriers.

To help mitigate the risks, it is crucial to prioritize language training and ensure the availability of proficient language resources within your organization. Pre-M&A language and intercultural training helps streamline expansion strategies, improve communication, and build stronger client relationships.
