82-Year-Old Billionaire Judy Faulkner Is Giving Away 99% Of Her $7.8 Billion Fortune

Most people have never heard of Judy Faulkner, yet her work quietly affects almost every hospital visit in America. She’s the founder of Epic Systems, the electronic medical-records company that stores data for 300+ million patients. And at 82, she has made one of the biggest philanthropic commitments of any living billionaire.

Faulkner signed the Giving Pledge, promising to donate 99% of her wealth — not someday if she feels like it, but through a legal estate plan that transfers nearly all her Epic shares into a charitable foundation. Instead of handing billions to heirs, she directed her fortune toward helping families with healthcare, education, food, shelter, safety, and basic needs.

Her Roots & Wings Foundation already supports hundreds of nonprofits, gives multi-year unrestricted grants, and is on track to distribute $100 million per year in the coming years. The foundation focuses on communities in Wisconsin and across the US, especially low-income children and families.

Faulkner started Epic in 1979 in a small Wisconsin apartment with about $70,000, avoided venture capital, kept the company private, and turned it into the largest EHR provider in the country. Today she’s worth about $7.7–7.8 billion, and nearly all of it is committed to philanthropy.

As you may already know, we are proud to be the most diverse and innovative part of the healthcare system, serving patients from all backgrounds in communities of all sizes. We have a significant impact on rural and minority populations, and over 31 million patients, including 9 million children, 3.5 million seniors, and 400,000 veterans, depend on us as their healthcare home nationally. In Michigan alone, there are over 700,000 patients who rely on our services.

However, if funding lapses, it will create uncertainty, hamper our ability to plan for patients’ needs and hinder our recruitment efforts in a highly competitive labor market. Stable funding allows us to retain and recruit essential healthcare providers, reach more underserved communities, and enhance access to behavioral health and dental services, among many others.

Since the ARRA Act was initiated in 2009, I have been part of the whirlwind of healthcare informatics, from being part of the cutting edge, working directly with the Michigan governor, vendors, and other key healthcare players within Michigan down to working directly with individual providers.
