New Post from the Attic!

The other day, we were in a crawl space and found this beautiful specimen popping up from under the moisture barrier. The plant itself is not harmful to the home however the moist dark conditions have allowed it to thrive. Nature always finds a way!

To learn more about Sarcodes (Snow Plants) check out the USDA Forest Service Website

To find out more about sub area inspections and options to better control ground moisture and organic growth in your crawl space, contact us.

New Post from the Attic!

With all the winter weather and cold temperatures we have had so far this season, remember that with every hour your furnace is running, your furnace filter is collecting dust and other debris from the air in the home. A dirty filter will not only decrease furnace efficiency and increase your overall heating bill, a dirty filter can cause your furnace to malfunction (typical symptom, furnace cycling on and off for short periods of time during the heating process).

NEV-CAL recommends you check your filter regularly and replace or clean when dirty (minimum twice per year if using system for both heating and cooling). The filter on the left in the photo below is dirty and was removed from a furnace that was not properly operating. The installation of a new filter (right) resolved the problem and will help prolong furnace life and keep energy bills lower.

New Post from the Attic!

Is this water heater properly braced?

Water heaters in California must be anchored or strapped to limit lateral movement in the event of seismic activity. In most cases, this is done by installing bracing/strapping systems commonly available for purchase that are approved by the California Division of the State Architect.

Other methods of securing the tank are normally permitted so long as they properly and securely brace the tank to prevent movement. Check with the local building department in your area to find what is required for your area.

The tank in the photo above is “strapped” but in no way secured to prevent lateral movement in the event of an earthquake. The tank may not directly move from side to side however that small shelf the tank sits on is braced with only a 2×4 to support the weight. It would not take much movement to have the entire unit fall, breaking the connections and even causing harm to people. Imagine sitting there at the moment of “the big one”.

New Post from the Attic!

The summer of 2016 brought with it a large population of wasps in the Tahoe Basin. This football sized nest was found on a second home in Truckee. Nests of this size are dangerous and should not be disturbed by homeowners. If you come across a wasp nest of this size it is highly recommended that the county vector control department is notified.

New Post from the Attic!

Inspecting as many houses as we do at NEV-CAL, you think one had seen it all. Came across this in a master bath today. The couple that “goes” together, stays together. But, you cannot hold hands, there is a partition between these two commodes.
