This post represents the second half of the Henry’s Fork Mayfly project for an upcoming June adventure. My previous post highlighted the PMD Mayfly, and this post highlights the Western Flav Mayfly that will also be seen, historically , on the Henry’s Fork during the month of June. Thirty years of experience on the River that has been enjoyed by my new client, David, allowed for us to be very specific in what we were looking for in the way of patterns that should be successful. David prefers using crippled and emerging patterns during the hatches to separate his offering from the numerous naturals that should be floating by in the film. I have learned over the years that in regards to a fly pattern, the most important aspect is to consider the Trout’s point of view and not the fisherman’s. Our patterns that come out of our vise here at Morrettflyfishing.com are our attempt of Impressionistic art, the blending of colors and shapes and materials that encourage the trout to believe in what he is seeing as the fly enters and drifts through his window of inspection. A lot of thought and time at the vise and streamside goes into this endeavor with a purpose in mind for each part of the fly from head to tail. All that being said, without a proper presentation from the flyfisherman, the best pattern in the world is laughed at by our finny friends. I am sure David and his boys know exactly what they’re doing, and I anticipate great success on their fishing adventure. We suggest the next time you go into a fly shop and move over to the fly bin section, turn the fly upside down and look at the bottom of the pattern. That’s what the Trout sees. If we can help you with any part of your fly fishing adventures, please reach out, if we don’t have a good suggestion we can usually turn you onto someone who will. Thank you again for your continued support and we wish you a Peace that surpasses all understanding flowing down from the Mountain. .

Working on this order for a Henry’s Fork fly fishing adventure in June, not me a new client. First half of the order will be focused on PMD Mayflies in the various stages of the adult’s life cycle that will be seen floating in the film. Very selective trout require a very careful eye as to the details required to make an appealing pattern for the very particular Henry’ Fork trout. After about an hour long conversation with a very accomplished fly fisherman, David, and some wonderful photos of the natural Pale Morning Dun Mayfly, we came down on what we feel will do the trick when it comes to truly matching the hatch on a very technical river. Klinkhammer Emergers, Crippled Duns, and Crippled Spinners with egg sacs should be a little something different for the Trout to choose from in June. I have to get back to the vise, only halfway through with Western Flavs to follow. Peace. ’sForkTroutFishing

The weather is beautiful here in the Mountains of Western North Carolina. We took an opportunity to do a little early Spring searching for Trout, in delayed harvest sections, while trying to identify what fly patterns the Trout might be looking up for in cool, clear, skinny Mountain streams in late March. The North Carolina Baker boys, Andy and Dustin, were kind enough to drop the old man off on a very nice stretch beside the stream while the two of them went exploring. This gave us a great opportunity to try many different patterns on many different Mountain trout. We have included some photos of a few of the patterns that performed best on a clear cool day on a familiar stream that has a lot of fishing pressure this time of year. We employed longer and lighter leaders in order to not spook our little finny friends in very, very clear water. Patterns included in our arsenal that day in sizes 16 through 20 consisted of small dry patterns due to the fact the trout were looking up and eating something that was hard to see for even young eyes. Jassid Beetles, Early Black Stoneflies, Griffith’s Gnat, Cuda’s Deerfly, Black Fur Ant, Buck’s Beetle, and a size 10 Glacier Lake Bu**er produced very well throughout the morning into early afternoon, then the Trout were done playing. We could not have asked for a better day, with the exception of the monster that caught Andy‘s leader on a nasty set of Brown trout teeth. Right now is a great time to be on your local waters or make a trip to the mountains here in Western North Carolina. If we can help you with any questions you might have or flies that you might need, please reach out and thank you for all your support from all of us here at Morrettflyfishing.com. And as always Peace.

We have spent the last few years exploring our new fly fishing world here in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina. I do receive a lot of orders for what I would recommend in regard to fly patterns that have a long history of success on Mountain streams. Quite honestly, it has taken me a while to experiment with the flies and the fishing of Southern Appalachian trout streams. Thanks so much to all of the folks at Davidson River Outfitters for their help with choosing patterns and the recommendation of materials needed to tie some original fly patterns that were developed in this area and have caught fish on these streams for a long, long time. I have caught Trout locally, somewhere in the mountains, using all of the seven patterns I have pictured below. My last few orders for Mountain stream fly patterns have included: Yellow Hammer Nymph, Sheep Fly, ThunderHead, Griffith’s Gnat, Yellow Hammer Soft Hackle, Red Fox Squirrel Nymph, Caddis Green Holy Grail Nymph. Of course there are other patterns that work. I just have come to the conclusion, if I have these seven patterns in my personal fly box I am able to draw the attention of the resident trout on most days. Thanks for your interest and continued support of Morrettflyfishing.com and again thanks to everyone at DRO for being there. Please reach out if there’s anyway we can help you on your fly fishing adventure. And as always, Peace from the Mountains and the Streams. .

Fly fishing for Lahontan Cutthroat Trout on Pyramid Lake located in Nevada used to be on my bucket list, I think. As time has passed, I have come to the realization that I might not check this one off my lifetime list of fly fishing destinations. That’s OK. I truly believe I haven’t missed much on my path in regards to my fly fishing. It’s funny that the passing of time seems to rearrange our list on a regular basis. By being a custom fly tier, I have learned to live vicariously through my clients adventures by tying flies for them to use on many bodies of water, spread out over 29 states, that I would have liked to experience myself. The Pyramid Lake Bu**er project is an example, for me, of that exact situation. A new client from Nevada reached out to me through our website, Morrettflyfishing.com, to inquire as to whether I could MATCH a particular fly a guide friend of his ties, uses, and shares with his friends. My client Eric felt guilty about going to his friend every time he needed more ammo. Eric fishes Pyramid Lake about 45 times a year, he goes through some flies. This situation is exactly why an old time custom fly tier is still needed in the fly fishing world. An avid fly fisherman that knows exactly what he wants, but it’s not available in the local fly bins. After a few conversations and a sharing of photos with Eric, we came up with our version of the Pyramid Lake Black Bu**er. Eric‘s first trip of the new year is coming up in February and he assured me he would send me some current pictures of our fly attached to the jaw of one of these Monsters. Peace to all our friends from the mountains and the streams of Western North Carolina.

Just catching up on posting some of our orders that have gone out the door over the last couple of months. We’ve been very busy tying and that’s great because there hasn’t been much weather lately for trout fishing in the mountains. This first order was cool, in that it came from some adult kids that wanted to get their Father a special Christmas present this year. It ended up being a nice little selection of flies to be used in West Virginia as well as Virginia. This package included a variety of variations of the Mattress Thrasher as well as a nice little Yellow Hammer Soft Hackle and also a Caddis Green Holy Grail to drop below the Thrasher as needed. Based on the response from the client, they look great and we hope the Trout think so as well. Thanks for your interest, and your continued support of MorrettFlyFishing.com. We wish you peace from the Mountains. .com

Took a little business trip with Melanie Morrett from MorrettFineArt to a local mountain stream. We wanted to try out some dry fly patterns to see if we could catch any local trout looking up for a mid November snack. We also took the time to gather some local grasses to be used for Mel’s artwork. We found some very nice grass specimens as well as some of the beautiful creatures found in our blue line streams. A size 18 Olive Thrasher proved to do the trick. The smaller size pattern was by far the most popular choice for the local Brown trout. We both are truly blessed to call this little corner of the world our office as well as home. Please let us know if we can help you with any of your Fly fishing or Fine Art needs. Christmas is just around the corner. Thanks to everyone for all your support. Peace. .

Delayed Harvest Trout can be picky at times. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. My senior partner, Andy Baker and I decided to spend the morning on one of our local streams. The plan was to try out a couple different colors of an attractor pattern with the possibility of putting a smaller dropper on the bottom. Andy chose the Green Halloween Thrasher and I chose the Orange Thrasher. Andy out fished me three to one as I received many refusals while he was netting the Mountain Slam, several times. We spent the rest of the day confirming the fact that the color of the pattern made a difference,at least that day. Oh make no mistake, God Blessed us both that day, He was just especially good to Andy. Peace.
