🌱 This spring, I’ve been getting a lot of calls about thin, delayed, or patchy bermudagrass lawns. In many cases, what homeowners are seeing is winter injury — not chemical damage.

🎓 I’ve spoken directly with turfgrass pathologists and specialists from the University of Arkansas about what we’re seeing across the area this year. The combination of temperature swings, dry winter conditions, wind exposure, and stressed turf has created conditions for significant winter damage on many lawns.

⚠️ One thing that’s important to understand:
Winter injury often shows up in patterns. Higher, more exposed areas may green up slower, while low or protected areas recover faster. Lawns with poor root systems, low pH, compaction, drought stress, or previous stress tend to show the most damage.

🌿 We’re also seeing w**ds move into weakened areas. That does NOT mean the lawn was “burned” by treatment. Weeds are opportunistic and naturally invade thin or stressed turf.

✅ What helps recovery:
• Proper fertility timing
• Correct mowing height
• Water management 💧
• Soil correction (especially low pH)
• Patience and warmer soil temperatures ☀️

Some lawns will recover fully with time. Others may need aeration, soil amendments, or seeding/sodding in severe areas.

🔎 At Advantage Lawn & Chemcare, we don’t just spray lawns — we diagnose what’s actually happening beneath the surface.

📞 If your lawn is struggling this spring, we’d be glad to take a look and help determine the cause.

Why equipment cleaning matters — especially when multiple crews service the same lawn.

This is what builds up on equipment after a full day of treating lawns — grass clippings, seed heads, and debris from yard to yard.

Before starting each day, I clean my equipment to help prevent carrying w**d seeds or disease from one property to the next.

Here’s why this matters:

Some lawns are treated professionally but are mowed by outside crews that may service many different properties each day. If equipment isn’t cleaned between yards, w**d seeds can easily be carried into a lawn that was previously clean.

And when w**ds show up later, many people assume the treatment failed — when in reality, new w**d seeds were introduced after treatment.

Good lawn results depend on:
✔ Proper treatment
✔ Proper timing
✔ Clean equipment
✔ Good mowing practices

Most people never see this part of the job — but it’s one of the details that helps keep lawns looking their best.

Also want to give a shout out to Norris Lawncare. Bryan Norris goes above and beyond to make sure his equipment is always clean.

Spring w**ds start before you see them.

Crabgrass and other w**ds germinate underground when soil temps warm — not when they pop up. By the time w**ds are visible, pre-emergent is already too late.

Professional w**d control is about timing, not luck.

Spring pre-emergent season is approaching fast.

Why Lime Matters for Your Lawn 🌱
Arkansas soils naturally turn acidic over time, which keeps your grass from absorbing fertilizer and growing thick and green.

Lime fixes that. ✔️
It raises soil pH, improves nutrient uptake, reduces w**ds, and strengthens your turf.

And now is the right time to apply it — lime takes months to fully incorporate into the soil, so treating now prepares your lawn for strong spring growth.
