As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we want to take a moment to share in the celebration of the people, history, heritage, and culture that are an important part of our diverse community.

Hispanic and Latino communities have made lasting positive contributions to our nation, including right here at home. We’re grateful for the Hispanic and Latino members of our Northwest Fire District family and the work they do to serve our community.

As we close out this month of celebration, we carry that appreciation forward.

Spooky season is here! If you decorate for Halloween, make sure your decorations aren’t creating a fire hazard.

🕯️ Choose battery-operated candles.
🔥 Keep decorations away from heat sources and open flames.
🚪 Keep doors, exits, and walkways clear so you can safely escape in an emergency.
🏠 Don’t block your address or house numbers.

A little preparation goes a long way toward a safer Halloween!

Please join us in congratulating Assistant Chief Alex Sepulveda on 30 years of service to Northwest Fire District.

Three decades of dedication, leadership, and commitment to our community is an incredible milestone. We are grateful for the experience, knowledge, and service Chief Sepulveda has brought to Northwest Fire District throughout the years.

No one runs alone!

Mini Musters put fire life safety lessons into action with hands-on challenges that reinforce what students have learned in the classroom.

Students complete the stations in teams. And if there’s an uneven team? A firefighter steps in to make sure no one runs alone!

That’s what our Mini Musters are all about: reinforcing important fire safety lessons and creating connections between students and the firefighters who serve their community!

The Equipment Service Technician supports the Northwest Fire District in its mission to save lives, protect property, and care for our community through the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of the District’s personal protective equipment (PPE) and fire ground and rescue equipment.

There’s always something happening in the Prevention Division! Yesterday, it was the Contractor’s Coffee Forum!

The Contractor’s Coffee Forum is a semi-annual discussion bringing together Fire Prevention staff from across Southern Arizona with contractors, engineers, architects, and interested community members.

The forum provides an opportunity to discuss fire code requirements, fire systems design and installation, and other topics related to development and fire safety.

These conversations help foster collaboration, answer questions, and keep fire safety an important part of the development process.

Last Thursday, firefighters responded to a small RV fire. There were no injuries, and the fire was quickly extinguished. But for firefighters, the work doesn’t stop, or start, there.

When you call 911, you’re not just getting a crew that knows how to fight a fire. You’re getting people who continually train, maintain their equipment, and reset after every call so they’re ready for yours.

Before the call, crews are focused on training and preparedness. They keep their apparatus, tools, and equipment in working order and continually train to stay prepared for any call that could happen at any time.

During the fire, no matter the size, the focus is on a seamless response. Crews work together to accomplish the task safely and quickly.

After the fire, the work continues. Tools and equipment are cleaned, gear is reset, and crews make sure everything is ready for the next call.

The call may be over, but the hard work never stops.

Charge into Fire Safety!

This Fire Prevention Week, we’re sharing a few simple ways to help prevent lithium-ion battery fires. The NFPA recommends:

🔌 Use the right charger. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🔋 Unplug when fully charged. Don’t leave devices charging longer than necessary.

🛋️ Choose a hard surface. Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, not on beds, couches, or pillows where heat can build up.

🚨 Know the warning signs. Stop using a device if it gets unusually hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

From phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives.

Make smart choices every time you plug in.
