Looking for a bright spot to focus on? Try the Field & Lab Journal, where Chris Lange talks about some pretty amazing Hohokam shell-etching techniques (and, in one case, etching AND painting). An adorable horned frog relief is a bonus. Head over to desert dot com (slash) etched-shell.

Jim Vint's background research for a recent survey near Arivaca turned up sensational newspaper stories about a 1901 homicide straight out of a B-movie western. Checking those accounts against the Pima County Coroner's inquest revealed a different, if equally tragic, tale of recklessness. Head over to desert dot com (slash) robledo to read about the importance of checking your sources (and maintaining muzzle discipline).

Our very own Homer Thiel has published a book about saloons in late 19th century-early 20th century Tucson! He will give a talk about the book and even sign copies for you at 1 p.m. on Nov. 17, in the Monsoon Room at JoJo’s Restaurant, 201 N. Court Ave. You can get tickets for the talk at the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson website, tucsonpresidio dot com.

Buy a round for local historical archaeologist Homer Theil, who just published the definitive history of Tucson saloons during the territorial period.
