Have you tasted Hackberries? Everything likes to eat them. Mammals, birds, insects. Yum yum.

They commonly grow as a sub-shrub of Mesquites, Ironwoods. They can take full sun, though, and once established they need little to no supplemental irrigation. Plant with a rain basin, and it will produce berries abundantly!

Its spiky, thoughtful planting location required.

Who’s looking at Who? 👀

Is that grass in your mouth? We love Sonoran Desert Tortoises so much. They deserve a habitat full of tasty native plants and a safe haven built just for them.

Tortoises enjoy being solitary, except to mate. Breeding them is not legal or safe (risks spreading disease to wild populations). So just one habitat per tortoise is the goal.

I can get behind this kind of development! Want help building a tortoise enclosure? That’s a thing we do at Desert Primrose Gardens, and fall/winter is a great time to build.

Why name a garden business after a desert primrose? 🌼 Kathleen Opeka loves how its soft, night-blooming flowers hold up in Tucson's heat. Her business, Desert Primrose Gardens Consulting , designs and installs edible and ecological gardens that mix food plants with natives, build healthy soil, and capture rainwater.

She even builds tortoise habitats. 🐢
