🐍 Rattlesnake avoidance training isn’t just for spring.

Southern Arizona dogs can encounter rattlesnakes well beyond the hottest months, which is why Animal Experts offers Snake & Toad Avoidance Training throughout the year at locations across Tucson, Marana, Green Valley, and surrounding communities.

The training teaches dogs to recognize and avoid rattlesnakes using their natural senses of sight, sound, and scent—helping them learn that a rattlesnake is something to stay away from, not investigate.

And additional classes are already scheduled throughout September and October at locations across Southern Arizona.

If your dog spends time hiking, walking desert trails, exploring the yard, or simply living in rattlesnake country, now is a good time to get training on the calendar.

🐍 Meet one of Southern Arizona’s newest residents.

In this video, Marc introduces a newborn Western Diamondback rattlesnake—known as a neonate—that’s only about a week old and just a little longer than a Bic pen.

And yes, even at that size, it’s already completely on its own.

Rattlesnakes give live birth rather than laying eggs, and a female may give birth to multiple neonates at once. Once born, the young snakes don’t stay with their mother—they head out into the desert and begin surviving on their own.

Marc also tackles one of the rattlesnake myths we hear all the time:

Are baby rattlesnakes more dangerous than adults?

No. That’s a myth.

In the video, Marc also explains some of the predators these tiny rattlesnakes face—including roadrunners, hawks, owls, and coyotes—and gives us a close look at one that is already shedding its skin.

And because this is Marc… there’s also an explanation for why the snake is sitting on top of a bucket instead of the kitchen table. 😂

🐍 Tucson has earned a pretty interesting distinction when it comes to snakes.

A recent WorldAtlas article highlighting “The National Parks With the Most Venomous Snakes” puts Saguaro National Park right at the top of the conversation—and that means Southern Arizona is very well represented.

According to the article, Saguaro National Park is home to eight species of venomous snakes, with its incredible diversity tied in large part to the Sonoran Desert ecosystem surrounding Tucson. The park spans both the Rincon Mountain District east of Tucson and the Tucson Mountain District to the west.

Among the species highlighted are the western diamondback rattlesnake, Arizona black rattlesnake, sidewinder, Sonoran coral snake and others that have adapted to very different elevations and habitats throughout our desert.

And Arizona makes the list twice.

Grand Canyon National Park is also featured, with six rattlesnake species found within the park—including the distinctive Grand Canyon rattlesnake, a species found nowhere else in the world.

For those of us who live in Southern Arizona, articles like this are a great reminder that we share our home with an extraordinary variety of wildlife.

Awareness and respect go a long way. If you encounter a snake around your home or property, give it plenty of space and let an experienced wildlife professional handle the situation safely.

🐾 Happy National Dog Day from Animal Experts!

Our dogs are family, adventure partners, hiking buddies, backyard supervisors and—occasionally—the ones who are a little too curious about something moving in the desert. 🐍

🦇 THROWBACK THURSDAY: Seven Years Later, Bats Are Still Pretty Incredible!

We’re digging into the Animal Experts archives for this week’s —and this one goes to bat for an animal that doesn’t always get the best reputation. 😉

Seven years ago, Mark shared an important message about bats, why they matter, and why education is such an important part of wildlife management.

Bats can make some people nervous, but they play an important role in healthy ecosystems. Depending on the species, bats can help control insect populations and pollinate plants—including agave. 🌵🦇

The video also highlights something that remains at the heart of what Animal Experts does: responsible wildlife management isn’t simply about getting an animal out of your home. It’s about understanding the animal, its lifecycle, and the safest and most humane way to handle the situation.

Mark explains how bat colonies are commonly addressed through exclusion, using methods that allow bats to leave a structure without simply trapping or removing them by hand. Timing matters, too, particularly when young bats may still be dependent on their mothers.

And then there are the myths! 👀

🦇 Bats aren't looking to fly into your hair.
🦇 They aren't blind—they use both vision and echolocation to navigate.
🦇 And yes, bats can carry rabies, which is one reason you should never handle a bat with your bare hands and should contact a qualified professional if you find one in or around your home.

Seven years later, the technology may have changed and Mark may have a few more wildlife stories under his belt—but the mission remains the same:

Educate. Respect the wildlife. Protect the people. Find the right solution.
