In OCTOBER 2018, I got some unexpected news. I began to cough up small amounts of blood but I was feeling OK. I visited the emergency room where they immediately admitted me. A scan showed spots (lesions) on the lungs, liver, and intestines. A biopsy confirmed the spots were melanoma. I never smoked so this unwelcome news as a surprise.
I went to an oncologist, who said I had stage 4 aggressive melanoma. Stage 4 means “can not be cured” but could be arrested. The prior treatment of radiation and chemo had serious side effects with little success. The oncologist recommended, a new treatment Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) has less side effects but is effective 50% of time. I call the treatment “smart chemo” where only bad cells are attacked.
I began treatment immediately which is an IV drip every three weeks. The drug is new and each treatment is $11,500 which Medicare pays 80% and my secondary insurance the remainder. I am fortunate to be insured as there is no cost to me.
I had my fourth treatment and they repeated the PET scan which showed the leisons were “no longer active”. Great news!!! I am short of breath and need to sleep more often but no other side effects. I will continue the treatments for the remainder of my life.
I tell people the side effect is “I appreciate each day with new enthusiasm.". I think I am much smarter and better looking” but my wife does not agree.
I am feeling well enough to take a 12 day cruse to Spain, France, and Italy in June. I am looking forward to seeing the sites, I am handicapped and must us a walker. I am informed the locations are not easy to navigate in a walker so my son Neil will be my care giver (pusher)
