If you’re thinking about making a real industry shift, you don't have to start from scratch. Here’s how to do it smartly:
👉 Reframe your experience: Map out where your past work overlaps with your target industry.
👉 Do consulting first: Try a 90-day project (or similar) in your new field. This gives you real exposure, lets you learn the language, and builds credibility.
👉 Make your resume universal: List out all your skills, even ones tied to your old industry, then translate them into language anyone — even someone outside your old field — can understand.
👉 Spot opportunity gaps: Look for places in the new industry where problems aren’t solved yet; your “outsider” perspective is actually a strength.
👉 Translate achievements strategically: Find 10 job posts for your target role, pull out the recurring responsibilities, then map your past wins (with metrics) into the language of that role.
A career transition isn’t about throwing your experience away, it’s about repositioning it. When you understand the value you already bring to the table, you can step into a new industry with confidence, clarity, and momentum.
