GRANT MYTHS - the Big Three
by Dana Schuler Drummond, MA, CFRE, GPC

There are a lot of misconceptions about grant seeking, but three myths I hear the most in my consulting work are these:

1. Grants are "free money."
2. There are BILLIONS in unclaimed grants waiting for you.
3. You can use AI to write your grants.

-Free money? Nope. Grants are similar to contracts -- they are given for a specific purpose during a set timeframe and have certain expectations.

THE TRUTH: In terms of time and effort, grants are expensive to get AND manage. They are worth it - but they aren't free money.

-BILLIONS in unclaimed grants just waiting. Nope. While there are can be grant funds that are not fully awarded, it is usually because the grant terms are so specific that it is difficult to find organizations that fit. Foundations and governments are NOT just sitting around wishing they had some grant requests to fund.

THE TRUTH: Most grantors have FAR more requests for funds than they have available to give.

-You can use AI to write your grants. Be careful. There are a lot of legal, ethical, and practical concerns with using AI in grants. While AI may provide tools for grant writers, using it to build a full application isn't a good idea. There are usually too many errors and AI awkwardness for it to appear genuine to a reader.

THE TRUTH: There's a fundraising adage that "people give to people." This holds true in grants as well. Your application needs to be accurate and compelling...and sound like a human wrote it.
