You've probably heard the Gretzky quote about skating to where the puck is going, not where it's been.
That's not just a sports quote. That's leadership. One of the big themes in my new book, The Strategic Lens, is that reactive leaders spend most of their time responding to what already happened.
Strategic leaders are trying to see where this is headed. They're asking different questions. What pattern is forming here? What are we missing? What's likely to happen next if we stay on this path? What problem are we creating right now that's going to show up three months from now?
That applies to team issues, growth issues, hiring decisions, customer problems, all of it. The best leaders are not always the ones with the fastest answer in the moment. A lot of times, they're the ones who saw it coming earlier than everybody else.
That's what better strategic thinking really is. Not using bigger words, not making strategy more complicated, just getting better at seeing what others miss before it becomes obvious.
