You've probably heard the Gretzky quote about skating to where the puck is going, not where it's been.

That's not just a sports quote. That's leadership. One of the big themes in my new book, The Strategic Lens, is that reactive leaders spend most of their time responding to what already happened.

Strategic leaders are trying to see where this is headed. They're asking different questions. What pattern is forming here? What are we missing? What's likely to happen next if we stay on this path? What problem are we creating right now that's going to show up three months from now?

That applies to team issues, growth issues, hiring decisions, customer problems, all of it. The best leaders are not always the ones with the fastest answer in the moment. A lot of times, they're the ones who saw it coming earlier than everybody else.

That's what better strategic thinking really is. Not using bigger words, not making strategy more complicated, just getting better at seeing what others miss before it becomes obvious.

Let me tell you something I've seen over and over again.

A lot of companies do not have a strategy problem. They have a staying strategic problem. They'll do the retreat, the planning session, the offsite, whatever you want to call it.

They talk about priorities, align around what matters most, and everybody leaves feeling pretty good.

Then Monday shows up. Now it's emails, meetings, customer issues, operational noise, shifting priorities, and random stuff nobody planned for. And before long, that strategy is still sitting there somewhere, but it's not really driving decisions anymore.

That's a big idea in my new book, The Strategic Lens.

Strategy cannot just live in a document. It has to live in how the business actually operates. Because we talked about it and we built it into the way we run the company are two completely different things.

That's why so many teams stay busy, but still feel like they're not making the progress they should be making. The strategy didn't disappear. It just got buried under the urgent.

Moving forward by giving back.

Yesterday, the Arrowhead Consulting team had the privilege of volunteering at Special Olympics, something we’re proud to do each year.

It is always a great reminder of the power of community, encouragement, and showing up for others.

Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches, and families. You inspire us.

We highly recommend getting involved and supporting this great event.

One of the most expensive mistakes leaders make is solving the wrong problem really fast, and I get it. When pressure is on, your instinct is to do something, fix it, address it, jump in, move, because action feels productive.

But one of the ideas I talk about in the strategic lens is that sometimes the smartest thing you could do is step back before you step in.

There's a concept I love about getting off the dance floor and going to the balcony because when you're on the dance floor, all you can really see is what's right in front of you. One issue, one conversation, one problem, one fire. But when you get to the balcony, you can now actually see the whole thing. You can see patterns, you can see what's connected. You can see whether the issue everyone's reacting to is even the real issue.

That pause doesn't make you weak. It doesn't make you indecisive. It makes you strategic.

Some of the best decisions you'll ever make happen because you created just enough distance to see the system, not just the symptom.

You know what I see with a lot of business owners and leaders, it's usually not that they're lazy, and it's not that they don't care, and it's definitely not that they're not working hard enough.

Most of the time, they're just buried in motion: meetings, emails, customer issues, employee issues, stuff breaking, stuff changing, new opportunities popping up every 5 minutes.

It just never stops.

And when you're in that mode, it's really easy to confuse movement with momentum.

One of the ideas I get into in my new book, The Strategic Lens, is that activity and progress are not the same thing.

A lot of businesses get really good at reacting.

They solve problems fast, they stay busy, they keep things moving.

But then the same issues keep showing back up, just wearing different clothes.

That's usually a sign you're dealing with symptoms, not the real problem.

To me, strategic thinking starts when you stop asking, How do I put this fire out and start asking, Why does this fire keep starting in the first place?

That shift right there changes how you bleed, how you decide, and how your business grows.

If you’ve been anywhere near project management over the last few years, you know that the shift from PMBOK 6 to PMBOK 7 was a big one.

It moved us away from rigid processes and into a more flexible, principle-based approach.

Now, PMBOK 8 is taking that evolution a step further—and if you’re planning to sit for the PMP exam after early July, this is the version that matters.
