The Great Kiskadee Has a Little Man’s Complex

The Great Kiskadee might not be the biggest bird around, but apparently, nobody told it that.
This bold little bird is known for being loud, territorial, and fearless. It will defend its space, chase off intruders, and act like it owns the neighborhood.

And then there’s the voice.
The Great Kiskadee has a loud, unmistakable call that sounds almost like it's announcing, “This is MY territory.”

They’re commonly found around open areas, gardens, parks, wetlands, and water, where they hunt insects, small animals, and even fish.

So while it may look like just another colorful songbird, the Great Kiskadee has the attitude of a bird twice its size.
Small bird. Big attitude.

Hospitals are designed to protect people.
But from a bird’s perspective, they can look like the perfect place to move in.

Large buildings offer protected rooftops, ledges, HVAC equipment, loading areas, landscaping, food sources, and plenty of places to escape bad weather.

Once birds discover those resources, they may establish regular roosting or nesting areas, and that can turn into a recurring facility problem.
The biggest mistake is treating every dropping as an isolated mess.
If employees are constantly cleaning the same areas, birds are telling you something: there’s an attraction nearby.

Look beyond the droppings.
Find where the birds are feeding, drinking, roosting, or nesting, and eliminate the reason they keep coming back.

Because at a hospital, proactive bird management isn't just about protecting the building.
It's about protecting the environment around the people inside it.

Your employees shouldn't have to dodge bird droppings on their way into the building.

Yet at many facilities, the response is the same:
Clean it up.
Pressure wash it.
Come back tomorrow.
Clean it again.

That cycle can continue for months because the cleanup is treating the symptom, not the reason birds are there.
Take a closer look at the area.

Are birds roosting on the roofline above the walkway? Are they nesting near an overhang? Is there food, water, shelter, or another feature making that location attractive?

When the same walkway keeps getting contaminated, it's time to stop asking, “How do we clean this?”
Start asking, “Why do birds keep choosing this location?”

Identify the attraction. Address the source. Protect the people using the facility.
A clean walkway is good. A walkway birds don't want to use is better.

If you see a few birds hanging around a Sam’s Club parking lot, it might not seem like a big deal.
But for a high-traffic retail facility, it can become a serious problem.
Large parking lots, food waste, dumpsters, loading areas, rooftop equipment, and sheltered building structures can provide birds with everything they need to stick around.
And when they do, the problems start adding up:
Droppings on vehicles and sidewalks

Mess around customer entrances

Potential sanitation and contamination concerns

Bird activity around loading and receiving areas

More cleaning and maintenance costs

Customer complaints and a poor customer experience

The bigger issue?

Pigeon vs. Dove: Can You Tell the Difference?
For Pest pros, knowing the difference between a pigeon and a dove isn’t just a bird trivia question.

It’s part of properly identifying the pest bird you’re dealing with.
Pigeons and doves belong to the same family, Columbidae, and their appearance can overlap. But when you're inspecting a property, paying attention to size, body shape, behavior, flocking patterns, feeding habits, and where the birds are using the site can help you narrow down what you're dealing with.

Why does that matter?
Because bird identification is the first step toward effective bird control.
The species you identify can influence:

- Where you look for roosting and nesting activity
- What attractants are bringing the birds onto the property
- How they behave around food and water
- Which control strategies may be appropriate
- How you build an effective, site-specific management plan

Don't just see "birds."

WHY ARE GRACKLES ALWAYS HANGING OUT AT TACO BELL?

It’s not because they’re fans of the Crunchwrap.
Grackles are incredibly opportunistic birds. Fast-food restaurants give them almost everything they need:

Food- dropped food, overflowing trash, and scraps around drive-thrus.

Water- puddles, landscaping, and irrigation.

Shelter- rooftops, signs, light poles, and nearby trees provide safe places to rest.

And here’s where it becomes a problem…
A few grackles can quickly become dozens, or hundreds.

Once they learn that a Taco Bell parking lot is a reliable source of food and water, they can develop a routine and keep coming back.
That can mean droppings on vehicles, sidewalks, outdoor dining areas, and building surfaces, along with increased cleanup, customer complaints, and sanitation concerns.

The biggest mistake is waiting until the parking lot is covered in birds.
If the birds have already decided your restaurant is part of their daily routine, you have a bird-management problem, not just a bird problem.
The goal isn’t to chase grackles away. It’s to make your property less attractive to them in the first place.

CAN YOU GUESS THIS BIRD?
This bird might fool you at first…
It’s a woodpecker, but unlike most woodpeckers, you’ll often find it walking around on the ground looking for its next meal.

It uses its slightly curved bill to dig into the soil for ants and beetles, and its long, sticky tongue helps it grab them.

Look closely and you’ll notice its brown body covered in black spots and bars, along with a bright flash of yellow underneath its wings and tail when it takes off.
You can find this bird throughout much of North America, including Alabama, where it can be seen year-round.

And here's the big reveal…

This is the Northern Flicker, also known as the Yellowhammer.
And it isn't just Alabama's state bird…
