Can you guess this bird?
You might hear it before you ever see it.
This bird is a talented singer with an incredible repertoire, and it can even imitate the sounds of other birds. But when it’s not singing, it’s often down on the ground, scratching through leaves and soil with its long bill looking for insects, spiders, seeds, berries, and other food.

It prefers dense thickets, brushy areas, hedgerows, overgrown fields, and forest edges where it can stay hidden in thick vegetation.
And here’s a big clue…
This bird has a special connection to the Peach State.
It was officially designated the state bird of Georgia in 1970.

So, did you guess it?

People often call it luck when someone finally gets the big opportunity.
They don’t see the early mornings.
The late nights.
The failed attempts.
The uncomfortable conversations.

The hundreds of times they kept going when nobody was watching.
Luck tends to find people who are already moving.

The person who keeps learning is ready when the opportunity appears.
The person who keeps making connections has someone to call when the right door opens.

Most birds hunt by chasing, grabbing, or waiting for their prey.
The Green Heron has a different strategy.

This clever little hunter can use objects on the water’s surface to attract fish. A feather, insect, or small piece of debris can become a lure.

Ever wonder why you sometimes see hundreds of birds hanging around a Costco parking lot?
It might look random, but there’s usually a reason.

Large retail centers can check several boxes for birds at once: open pavement for feeding, rooftops for resting, landscaped areas for cover, water sources, and food scraps that are easy to find.

Then add fall migration, when birds are actively looking for dependable places to stop, feed, and recharge.

That’s when a parking lot can go from completely normal…
to covered in birds.

The interesting part?
The birds aren’t necessarily attracted to the store itself.
They’re responding to the entire environment the store has created.
Next time you see a flock taking over a parking lot, look around.

What if I told you there’s a bird that has basically given up on having legs?
Meet the oilbird.

Its feet and legs are incredibly reduced compared with most birds because this species spends so much of its life roosting and nesting inside caves.

Instead of relying on its feet, the oilbird is built for what it actually needs: flying.

Its long wings allow it to maneuver through dark, narrow cave passages, while its incredible low-light vision helps it see in conditions where most birds would struggle.

But it gets even stranger.
Oilbirds can also use echolocation, producing clicking sounds and listening for the echoes to help navigate through the darkness.

And when they leave the caves at night?
They aren't hunting mice or insects.
They're looking for fruit.

So this bird has evolved to have tiny, almost useless legs, incredible wings, specialized eyes, and even its own biological sonar.
The oilbird is a pretty incredible example of what happens when evolution builds a bird almost entirely around life in the air.

Why do birds flock to shopping centers during fall migration?
It’s more than just the food.

Shopping centers can accidentally create the perfect combination of roosting, shelter, food, and nearby habitat that migrating birds are looking for.

- Powerlines give birds elevated places to perch and roost, often right above restaurants and parking lots.
- Trees and landscaping provide cover and natural habitat where birds can rest and move through the area.
- Lawns and green spaces can attract insects and other natural food sources.
- Restaurants and dumpsters can provide easy access to food when birds are already nearby.

And during fall migration, birds are constantly looking for places to stop, rest, and refuel along their journey.

That means a shopping center doesn't have to provide everything a bird needs.
It just needs to provide enough of the right things in one convenient location.
The result?

Hundreds or even thousands of birds can turn an ordinary shopping center into a major roosting and feeding hotspot.

And once they find a dependable food source, they may keep returning day after day.

For feedlots, that can create some serious headaches:
- Feed loss from birds consuming livestock feed
- Droppings around bunks, equipment, and working areas
- Potential disease and contamination concerns from bird activity
- More cleanup and maintenance around the operation
- Disruption around livestock when large flocks are constantly moving through the lot

And the bigger the flock gets, the harder the problem can become to ignore.
What starts with a handful of starlings can eventually become hundreds or even thousands of birds competing for the same feed.

Different birds have developed different beak shapes and strengths based on what they need to survive. Some are built for cracking hard seeds and nuts. Others are designed for tearing meat, drilling into wood, filtering food from water, or gripping and handling objects.

And that’s what makes bird beaks so fascinating: their shape tells a story about how a bird lives.
The size, curve, thickness, and strength of a beak can reveal a lot about a bird’s diet, habitat, and behavior.

Why do birds flock to Walgreens?

It’s not necessarily because Walgreens has food or water.
During fall migration, birds are searching for places to rest, escape the weather, and stay protected between flights. And a Walgreens building can check several of those boxes.

- Large buildings provide shelter from wind and rain.
- Lighting can attract or disorient migrating birds, especially at night.
- Landscaping can provide cover and places to perch.
- And nearby trees, ponds, dumpsters, or other properties may provide the food and water they need.

That means a bird doesn’t have to find everything it needs in one place.
It can use Walgreens as a safe stopping point while traveling to nearby sources for food and water.

And when hundreds or thousands of birds are moving through an area?
A convenient building can quickly become a bird hotspot, leading to droppings, noise, property messes, and potential sanitation concerns.

Fall migration isn't just happening in the woods. It's happening around your customers, employees, and buildings.

Honestly… it makes perfect sense.
If you've ever owned a pet parakeet, you already know these little birds LOVE to bite. 😂
Fingers?
Bite.
Earrings?
Bite.
Your glasses?
Bite.
Anything you put within reach?
Probably bite.

Parakeets use their beaks for everything. They explore their surroundings, manipulate objects, groom themselves, communicate, and yes… sometimes they decide your finger looks like the perfect chew toy.
So when you see a parakeet dressed up like a tiny vampire…
Fangs? Check.
Beak? Check.
Looking for something to bite? Absolutely.

Maybe we didn't dress the parakeet like a vampire.
Maybe we finally dressed it as what it has been pretending to be all along.
