Week Two Begins for TFD Academy Class 114!

Today, the cadets learned how to operate the cascade machine, an essential piece of equipment used to refill the breathing air bottles firefighters wear when entering hazardous environments.

Throughout the academy, cadets will often go through two bottles per day during drills. With 22 cadets in the class, those bottles add up quickly!

By learning how to safely fill the bottles, the cadets are taking another important step toward ensuring they have the equipment they need to train safely and effectively.

Week two is underway, and Class 114 is continuing to build the skills they’ll need to become firefighters!

This Fire Prevention Week, charge in to fire safety and make safe charging your superpower.

-Use chargers and cables from reputable manufacturers.
-Don’t use damaged or frayed charging cords.
-Plug chargers directly into a wall outlet when possible.
-Keep charging devices away from beds, couches or anything that can burn.
-Unplug chargers when they’re not in use.

A cheap or damaged charger isn’t worth the risk of a fire. Be a safety superhero and charge smart, Tulsa!

Class 114 came ready to work.

After starting the day with their first test, the cadets took on “Learn It To Earn It,” a hard workout built around safety, teamwork and physical conditioning.

Each evolution puts them one step closer to earning the equipment they’ll rely on to stay safe throughout the academy.

It’s tough. It’s physical. And it’s designed to make them better firefighters.

Class 114 is putting in the work.

It’s Fire Prevention Week!

This year’s message is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but they can also create serious fire hazards when charged improperly.

Always use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Avoid cheap or incompatible replacement chargers.

A few seconds of safe charging can help prevent a fire.

Make safe charging your superpower.

Just before 9 a.m., Tulsa firefighters responded to a house fire near N. Gilcrease Museum Road and W. Edison Street after 911 callers reported that two people were inside.

Engine 2 arrived to find an adult female outside the home with injuries from the fire. Crews immediately began attacking the fire while Ladder 2 started a search of the home.

Firefighters located and rescued an 8-year-old girl. Once she was brought outside, crews determined she had no pulse and immediately began advanced life support.

Firefighters continued providing advanced life support as the girl was transported to the hospital. While en route, responders were able to re-establish a pulse. She remains hospitalized, and we are hopeful she will recover.

The adult female was also transported to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation. Neighbors told firefighters she attempted several times to re-enter the home to rescue the child before crews arrived.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately three hours, checking for hidden fire and making sure the fire was completely extinguished. Our investigators are working to determine the cause.

House fires are extremely dangerous. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and that everyone knows two ways out.

If there is a fire, call 911, get outside and stay outside. Never go back inside.

TFD crews joined Union Public Schools and EMSA OKLAHOMA for another Project ADAM cardiac arrest drill, this time at UHS Freshman Academy.

A Union teacher recognized the emergency, activated the school’s Cardiac Emergency Response Team (CERT) and called 911. Staff immediately began CPR, used an AED and continued lifesaving efforts until TFD A Platoon crews from Station 20 arrived.

Our firefighters provided advanced medical treatment, including lifesaving medications, before working alongside EMSA to complete the drill.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to train with our local schools and EMS partners. The more we practice together, the better prepared we are when seconds really matter.

Today, the Tulsa Fire Department gathered with family and friends to honor retired District Chief Bill N. Spradling.

Chief Spradling dedicated 31 years to TFD, serving as District 2 Chief at Station 11. A third-generation Tulsa firefighter, he carried on a family tradition of service that would continue with his son, Paul, making four generations of the Spradling family in the fire service.

Chief Spradling dedicated his life to serving others and helping keep Tulsa safe. We are grateful for his service, his sacrifices, and the legacy he leaves behind.

The TFD Honor Guard presented Fireman’s Last Call today in honor of a firefighter, leader, and brother who served his community with distinction.

Our thoughts are with his wife Barbara, his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Chief. Your watch is over. We’ll take it from here.

Today, TFD crews and our EMS Office joined, EMSA and Union Public Schools for a Project ADAM cardiac arrest drill at Rosa Parks Elementary School.

Thought this week, we will be participating in multiple drills at various schools within the Union Public school system to prepare for actual emergencies and sharpen our skills.

These drills give school staff, Tulsa Fire and EMSA Oklahoma the opportunity to practice together in a realistic, hands-on scenario, just like we would respond to an actual emergency at a school.

The goal is simple: strengthen coordination, practice lifesaving skills and make sure everyone is ready to respond when seconds matter.

We appreciate Union Public Schools and EMSA Oklahoma for partnering with us to make our communities safer!
