A couple of thoughts on this. Replace “process” with “manage by numbers” and “content” with “manage by mission”. Second, I challenge that high performers are a “pain in the butt”. This feeds into the myth of the productive jerk. High performers who are managed by mission, in a culture that is dynamic and adaptive are not a pain in the butt at all. It’s on the leader and the system they’ve created, not built into the person.
According to the Apple co-founder, the best employees are also a pain in the butt to manage.
