At approximately 14:20 today Merkel Fire was dispatched to a structure fire in the 1300 Block of North 13th. Upon the first units arrival heavy smoke was found coming from a single family residential structure. The occupants advised everyone was out of the building but one person was injured. The injured person was transported by Taylor County EMS to Hendricks Medical center with severe injuries. A quick interior attack was able to keep the fire contained to the kitchen. However, the entire home had major smoke damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the TCSO. Thank you to our automatic aid partners from Tye Fire Department, Trent Volunteer Fire Dept and Potosi Volunteer Fire Department. Thank you to Merkel Police Department and Taylor County Sheriff's Office for assistance with traffic control.

On September 11, 2001, first responders ran toward the danger and unknown.

-343 FDNY firefighters
-23 NYPD officers
-37 Port Authority Police officers
-2997 Civilians
-EMS and other emergency responders

More than 400 first responders made the ultimate sacrifice that day. In the 25 years since, hundreds more have lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses, and thousands continue to live with the lasting effects of their service.

As members of the fire service, 343 is more than a number. It represents courage, sacrifice, brotherhood, and a promise to never forget.

Today, we honor the fallen, stand beside those still fighting, and support the families who continue to carry their loss.

We Remember.
