Texas A&M Forest Service has raised the Wildland Fire Preparedness Level to Level 3 due to forecasted conditions, including high temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation, that are contributing to an elevated fire risk, along with increased resource commitments for prepositioning.

We continue to monitor the situation and stand ready to respond to any requests for assistance.

We grieve alongside those who served beside him, loved him, and called him family. The fire service is more than a job — it is a brotherhood and sisterhood built on sacrifice, courage, and unwavering dedication to others.

We ask the community to keep both men's family, friends, and fellow firefighters close in your hearts during this incredibly difficult time.

With the heaviest of hearts, we announce the death of Abilene Firefighter - Hunter Patterson. FF Patterson and his friend Brett Underwood, were involved in an off-duty, fatal vehicle accident early this morning, Friday, May 15, 2026. Both men passed away.

This is a devastating loss for Hunter’s family and our department. Hunter was a respected and beloved member of the AFD for 11 years. Hunter leaves behind his wife and children, as well as numerous other family members and friends. The loss of both men has greatly impacted members of our department. We ask that our wonderful community keep both families in their thoughts and prayers, while also respecting their privacy at this difficult time.

This evening your fellow Firefighters worked on hand and eye coordination using rescue tools. Doesn’t look too hard to most but these tools range from 70lbs and up. Doesn’t take long before they get heavy. Great job tonight team.

Approximately 12 PM Tye Fire was dispatched to a grass fire on IH 20. Remember to check your tire pressures. Low tires are the number one cause of blowouts. Thank you to the Taylor County sheriffs office and Merkel PD for helping slow down the traffic for us. Always pay attention to the road, Slow down move over.
