🌈 QUILT #12: SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW 🌈

“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue…”

What began with a Wizard of Oz quilt-show theme became something much more personal: a reminder of God’s promises and the hope of heaven.

In 2022, the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show celebrated its Ruby Jubilee with a Wizard of Oz theme. I thought about Dorothy’s blue gingham dress, her ruby red slippers, and the yellow brick road. But nothing inspired me—until the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow began playing in my heart.

A rainbow! Of course!

My Annie McHugs logo is shaped and colored like a rainbow for a reason. After visiting the Ark Encounter in Kentucky in 2017, I began praying for faith like Noah. Later, during prayer, the Lord gave me a vision of heaven with a window through which mighty angels were coming and going. That window shape inspired the first tool for which I received a patent (The Dresden Picture Window tool).

And my logo? It had to be a rainbow, honoring the Lord and reminding me of His promises.

This quilt grew from that inspiration. Colorful flowers bloom against a blue-and-white checked sky (like Dorothy’s Dress!), with charming birds, a rainbow umbrella, fluffy clouds, and a little cityscape below. Every detail brings the story to life!

But the rainbow reminds me of something far greater than a beloved movie song. We all long for a place without sorrow, pain, or tears—a place where troubles are finally gone.

Scripture gives us that hope:
📖 Revelation 21:4 — God will wipe every tear from our eyes. There will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.
And Yeshua reminds us in John 14:1–2 that His Father’s house has many rooms and that He is preparing a place for His people.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow is more than a cheerful quilt. It is a colorful reminder of the hope we have in the Lord and the promise of a home beyond this earthly life.

🧵 PRESERVING THE PAST

Some quilts tell stories that began long before we ever touched the fabric. ❤️

At Annie McHugs, I love collecting vintage quilt blocks and giving them a new life. This special quilt features delicate, hand-stitched pinwheels made by quilters of the past. Each lock holds a little piece of quilting history, and I wanted to make sure that history would continue.

I carefully reinforced the vintage blocks with lightweight stabilizer and framed each pinwheel block using my Circle Picture Window reverse appliqué tool. I hand-stitched small appliqué circles at the centers where the pinwheel pieces meet and reinforced the cornerstones, too.

The result? A beautiful new quilt that honors the hands that stitched these blocks originally while helping preserve their work for many more generations.

The white background lets each vintage pinwheel shine, while the dark sashing frames the blocks beautifully. Detailed longarm quilting adds texture and brings the entire design together.

This is more than a quilt. It's a celebration of the quilters who came before us and a reminder that handmade treasures deserve to be cherished.

Once Upon a Time, There Were Twelve Blocks…
Annie started making a Quarter Log Cabin block quilt for a friend's daughter and her new baby. But life had a surprise in store: the baby turned out to be twin girls!

With two little ones on the way and plenty to keep her busy ( a job), Annie set aside the twelve completed blocks, promising herself she would finish them later. (Yes, I'm the only one that does that!)

The baby girls grew up, Annie eventually retired, and the twins received different quilts of their own.

But those twelve original blocks? They stayed tucked away, waiting for their moment to shine.

Then one day, Annie rediscovered them after developing her Annie McHugs Circle Tool. Inspiration struck! She placed the treasured Quarter Log Cabin blocks inside colorful picture-window frames, transforming an unfinished project into a fresh, playful quilt design.
