As good as new but without the price tag! The Air Force Mask Inspection and Repair Program is ensuring Airman readiness and safety for the warfighter while saving an estimated nearly $8 million in just the first six months. The program is a partnership among the Joint Enterprise Fielding and Surveillance directorate, Air Force Materiel Command's Supply Chain Management Branch and the AFCEC Readiness Directorate's Emergency Management Division at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.

Katherine Simpson, research chemist with AFCEC's Requirements, Research & Development and Acquisition Division gave a tour of the lab to U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet 1st Class Hayley Weir and Academy assistant professor Ryan Burke of the department of military and strategic studies. Weir presented her capstone project on creating a ballistic-resistant, flexible, lightweight fabric. AFCEC funded the project, and initial results from the ballistics range at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, are promising. "We stopped the 9mm round, and we stopped the 44 magnum round. Not only did we stop it, it only went through one layer of the composite that we assembled," said Jeff Owens, the division's senior research chemist. The research team said potential uses for the innovated fabric include body armor, tents and vehicle lining. US Air Force Academy (Official)
