Happy 🌿🌱☘️ Today, we wanted to show off one of our best blue hostas, Halcyon.

This long time favorite blue hosta is one of the bluest of the blues.🩵 The leaves have good substance and hold their color late into the season.

Halcyon forms a clump about 2 feet wide, topped with soft lavender flowers in summer.

Time is running out! We only have 3 Praying Hands hostas left at the nursery.🙏

These are some of our favorite hostas for creating unique containers. They form a small clump composed of strangely folded dark green crinkled leaves, each with a narrow cream border.

While some areas have gotten relief, large swaths of the US, including parts of the Southeast, are still in drought.☀️ For hosta lovers, this may mean you need to do a bit of extra watering.

🌧Ideally, hostas need 1 to 1.5 inches of rain or supplemental water each week. You want the soil to be moist but not waterlogged. Using mulch is critical to help keep the soil cool and moist.

Container hostas will dry out quickly and require water far more frequently, especially in hot dry weather.🪴

One of the biggest mistakes I see gardeners make when laying out a new garden is plant spacing.

When laying out your design, check on the mature size of your plants. At Pine Forest Gardens, we print the mature size on the pot tag for each plant (see photo).

🌿🌦️Giving each plant the proper space allows it to get adequate nutrients, water, sunlight, and good air circulation. Your plants will be healthier, and your garden will look full but not crowded as the plants mature.

This unusual hosta features thick green leaves with cream margins held on stunning purple petioles. Sugar Cookie has a nice upright habit that shows off the purple petioles and white undersides of the leaves, bringing another hint of color to your shade garden.

Hosta lovers beware! We've been seeing more and more posts about hostas (like these two) from big box stores and large nurseries having Hosta Virus X (HVX).😢

Symptoms include inkbleed and discoloration, tissue collapse, and molted tissue or flecks on the leaves. There is no cure and infected hostas should be destroyed. To avoid HVX, shop at reputable hosta growers and look carefully for signs of disease.

🪴If you do pick up a hostas from a big box location, quarantine your new additions for several weeks.
