September 4, 2024, will always be remembered as a sad state of affairs for the community of Winder, GA.

What we have to understand is that school shootings have a profound and lasting impact on the communities in which they occur.

1. Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Survivors, including students, teachers, staff, and families, often experience deep emotional trauma. This can lead to anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health challenges, sometimes lasting for years. The broader community can also feel a collective sense of grief, fear, and helplessness.

2. Social and Cultural Changes: School shootings can lead to changes in how the community perceives safety. Parents may become more protective, schools may enforce stricter security measures, and there can be a general increase in fear, especially among students returning to school. Trust in the school system and local authorities may also erode.

3. Political and Policy Responses: In the aftermath of a school shooting, communities often become more politically active, advocating for changes in gun laws, mental health support, and school safety policies. Vigils, marches, and advocacy groups frequently emerge, focusing on preventing future tragedies.

What’s also seen often in the wake of a school shooting, there is an intense demand from parents, students, staff, and the wider community for swift action to ensure safety. Schools may feel pressure to respond visibly and quickly, even if the changes haven't been thoroughly considered.

Church security has become increasingly important due to various factors such as the rise in targeted attacks, hate crimes, and incidents of violence in places of worship as demonstrated in the attached video. Ensuring the safety of congregants, staff, and property is paramount in creating a secure and welcoming environment for worship and community activities.

Also, conducting security assessments for houses of worship helps identify vulnerabilities and develop strategies to mitigate potential risks. These assessments can include evaluating physical security measures, emergency response plans, and training for staff and volunteers. By understanding and addressing potential threats, houses of worship can better protect their members and assets, fostering a sense of safety and peace of mind within the community.

Lastly, teaching situational awareness to congregants is crucial for their safety and well-being. By being aware of their surroundings and potential threats, individuals can identify and respond to dangerous situations more effectively. This heightened awareness can help prevent incidents or minimize their impact, creating a safer environment for everyone in the congregation.

Thieves steal $30M from a storage building on March 31, 2024, Easter Sunday. I spoke with Fox11 Los Angeles regarding this incident as it relates to physical security assessments and what parameters should've been in place.

Security vaults that house money should have multiple layers of security measures to ensure maximum protection. Some of these measures may include:

Strong, reinforced walls and doors made of materials resistant to forced entry, such as steel. Access points should be limited and well-guarded.
CCTV cameras covering all areas inside and outside the vault, with monitoring by security personnel.
Intrusion detection systems that trigger alarms in the event of unauthorized access attempts or suspicious activities.
Biometric authentication (such as fingerprint or iris scanning), keycard access, or PIN codes for authorized personnel. Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security.
Trained guards stationed at entry points and within the facility to monitor and respond to security threats just to name a few.

By implementing these security measures, security vaults can significantly reduce the risk of theft or unauthorized access to the money stored within.

ON THIS DAY IN 1977: The Francis Scott Key
Bridge (I-695) opened to traffic as the final link in I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway). Shown here during its construction period that began in 1972, the 1.6 mile Key Bridge crosses over the Patapsco River. Scholars believe the span crosses within 100 yards of the site where Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the evening of Sept. 12, 1814.

I'm sure many of us have heard or seen the video of the Key Bridge collapse early this morning. Pray that the Coast Guard and many other agencies will rescue those who were involved.

Here are a few safety measures to prevent ships from colliding with bridge piers, which I'm sure were in place at the Key Bridge.
Having clear navigation signage indicating safe passages and restricted areas. Adequate lighting, especially at night or during low visibility conditions. Radar and sonar systems to detect approaching vessels and obstacles. Regular maintenance of navigational aids such as buoys and beacons. Mandatory pilotage services for larger vessels in challenging areas. Strict enforcement of speed limits and regulations near bridge structures. Continuous monitoring by bridge operators or traffic control centers.Training programs for ship captains and crew on navigating safely in confined spaces. Regular inspections of bridge structures to ensure no protruding hazards. Advanced technology such as automatic identification systems (AIS), which is for vessel tracking and collision avoidance.

Schools across the nation haven’t reached one month of in service and we’ve seen a plethora of violence in and around our schools. Our students and staff deserve to be at a place where they can feel safe and comfortable doing there jobs. Staff at this school mentioned in the article attached are concerned about security and their safety after violent incidents. They are asking to have the SRO program reinstated to assist with violent acts at the school. The SRO program was terminated following police violence protests in 2020.

Risk assessments are important for schools to ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors. By identifying potential hazards and evaluating the associated risks, schools can implement measures to mitigate those risks and create a safer environment. This proactive approach helps prevent accidents, injuries, and incidents. Risk assessments also aid in legal and regulatory compliance, enhance emergency preparedness, and build trust within the school community by demonstrating a commitment to safety.

Overall, parents can play a crucial role in preventing violence at schools by fostering a supportive and communicative environment at home. Encourage open conversations, teach empathy, and model respectful behavior. Keep an eye on their online activities and friends, and address any signs of aggression promptly. Promoting conflict resolution skills and involving them in positive extracurricular activities can also help channel their energy constructively.

As many of us sit back and reflect on the tragic active shooter incident that occurred at The Covenant School in Nashville, TN, we can't help but lend our expertise to the situation as security consultants. I've read many posts from my professional security consultants regarding this incident and they all have provided sound advice. As more information continues to unfold from this incident, we are still asking the same questions about security measures at our nation's schools.

Although I may not be adding my expert advice on this untimely tragedy, I’ll pray for those that lost their lives and what many of their family members will have to endure moving forward. Furthermore, lets take every opportunity to make a difference in someone's life. So when you see something beautiful in someone, tell them. It may take a second to say, but for them, it may last a lifetime.

Potential benefits of technology for teens

However, individuals who are addicted to technology tend to spend too much time using electronic devices, which can lead to negative physical and psychological effects. For example, they may experience eyestrain, neck pain, headaches, and other health problems from using electronic devices for long periods of time.

A teenage student airdropped a bomb threat while on a plane during his school field trip. The plane was taxiing and had to turn back when the threat was received. A physical search of the airplane following the initial sending of the message found the threat to be non-credible, as no evidence of a bomb was found on board. Airdrop is a proprietary file-sharing program available on Apple products, like iPhones and iPads, since 2011.

As a security consultant that specializes in risk assessments, it's vital to ensure Jewish temples have risk assessments conducted and some form of situational awareness training provided. We are all aware that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Thankfully, these hate groups did not disrupt the activities that were scheduled. It's also important that communication was ongoing with the communities about being aware of their surroundings.

Situational awareness is knowing where you are and what is going on around you, allowing individuals and organizations to be more alert and informed and to make better decisions. That sense of awareness and the understanding of what to do when you get a gut feeling about something dangerous is not something that comes naturally. These are skills that need to be trained. In fact, all employees need situational awareness training to help prevent accidents and dangerous events. Continue to stay alert. Thanks for sharing this interesting article with me Dana Neiger
