One of my appointments today is exactly why I started Across the Spectrum - Neuropsych Assessment Consulting LLC. I was scheduled to see an adolescent patient, to be assessed for IDD and ASD, referred from her family physician. Upon meeting this individual it was very clear that they suffered from a significant intellectual disability. Regardless, I went through with all testing, as we should, just to see what the individual was able, and not able to do. My suspicions were correct, as the individual was not able to complete any portion of the assessment, and not for a lack of trying.

This individual has slipped through cracks and has been pushed aside for many, many years. Referrals were made to other offices, who never even reached out to the individuals family to let them know they were to busy to schedule them. The school system has failed the individual, as they just keep moving them into the next grade without addressing the issues hand. Mom, was obviously very frustrated, but thankful at the same time.

Many people assume that a neuropsychological assessment gives a simple, black-and-white answer—100% accurate, like a medical test. In reality, the process is more nuanced, and that is exactly what makes it so powerful.

A well-conducted assessment does not just identify whether ADHD, Autism, or another condition is present. It paints a full picture of how a person thinks, learns, and functions in daily life. It clarifies strengths as well as challenges, highlights how mental health symptoms may interact with cognition, and provides targeted recommendations that go far beyond a diagnostic label.

✅ Even if you already have a diagnosis, assessment can help refine treatment planning.
✅ Even if you’re not sure about a diagnosis, it can reveal hidden barriers and practical supports.
✅ Even if the “answer” seems straightforward, the insight into why difficulties occur is what changes outcomes.

Neuropsychological testing is not about labeling—it’s about understanding. And when individuals and providers have that deeper understanding, treatment is more effective, goals become realistic, and quality of life improves.

About the Founder

My name is Michael Maloney, and I began working in neuropsychological assessment in 2018 in rural Pennsylvania. From the very beginning, I recognized the urgent need for these services to expand. With the guidance of excellent mentors, I focused on building a model of care centered around accessibility and efficiency.

In 2022, a patient flew to my office for testing because it was quicker than driving. At the time, clients across Pennsylvania were facing 16–20 month waitlists, but our assessment-focused practice, staffed with licensed psychologists and psychometricians, was able to see him in just a few months. That moment clarified to me the need to scale services statewide.

By the fall of 2024, myself and a licensed psychologist colleague of mine, established our first psychiatric facility partnership, and in early 2025, Across the Spectrum Neuropsych Assessment Consulting, LLC (ATC) was born. While I continue to administer assessments a few times per week (because I value meeting with clients) most of my time is now spent building partnerships with practices ready to expand access to neuropsychological services.
