Most people think they learned everything they need to know about writing in school. However, they don’t consider that they were writing for teachers who got paid to grade their writing in school. The student’s intentions were primarily writing for a teacher to get a good grade.

In business, we write for readers who are our managers, leaders, peers, direct reports, stakeholders, and customers. We are writing for the sake of making declarations, requests, offers, promises, commitments, assessments, and assertions. We write to coordinate action, manage emotions, and produce outcomes. In our writing, perhaps we can help other people around us see the world differently–more effectively.

When I ask people how they are doing, more than 90% say they are swamped.

And the busyness they are speaking of is primarily in the domain of work commitments.

Most people feel powerless in their ability to reduce their commitments.

We have the power to take back our Calendar, negotiate our commitments, and make time to acquire more knowledge for the sake of being more powerful and effective in our lives.

When you feel like you have no influence on other people,
begin with your RELATIONSHIPS.

As an IT Executive, people in my organization would often complain about not having influence with others. An employee would occasionally suggest they needed a promotion to a more significant title to have influence and get people to listen. They wanted political power.

Yet, I watched a few engineers and architects exhibit powerful influence and lead other peers towards innovative solutions. They had social power.

Those engineers and architects, who had no seeming political power, had incredible influence due to the social power they had accumulated. Sure, they were intelligent and creative. But the reason they had such astonishing impact was that they:
- Developed relationships with other members of the team
- Took time to understand the background and concerns of other teammates
- Listened respectfully to the ideas of others
- Consistently act with humility and zero arrogance
- Let other team members implement their ideas over their own
- Offered help to others even if they wouldn’t get credit

Don't Exceed Expectations, Exceed Conditions of Satisfaction!

People often declare they will Exceed Customer Expectations.

An expectation is an anticipation of what will probably or certainly happen.

The only way to guarantee you will exceed customer expectations is to have criteria for what they want to happen and their desired outcomes.

Businesses attempt to understand what customers desire and then deliver more than they anticipated.

As a leader in business, it is difficult to exceed the expectations of those you serve if you don't know the criteria for success.

Successful leaders:
1. Make offers to customers that include specific conditions of satisfaction
2. Confirm their customer has accepted their offer and the conditions of satisfaction
3. Commit to producing the conditions of satisfaction by a specific date and time
4. Communicate the state of their commitments along the way
5. Declare completion of their commitments and conditions of satisfaction
6. Seek agreement with their customer that the conditions of satisfaction have been met and exceeded

Such an approach will never leave a doubt the way expectations can.

7 Steps to Achieve your Goals in 2022!

In 2022 you will have 8,760 hours available to live the life you want.

If you would like to achieve your most important goals in 2022, consider these steps:

1. Brainstorm a list of very specific goals you would like to achieve.

Be very specific. Suppose you would like to lose weight. Specify how much weight you would like to lose.

2. Choose 3 to 5 Goals from your Brainstorm List that you CAN and WILL DO!

There is limited time and energy available to you. Take the time to decide which 3 to 5 Goals from your Brainstorm list you desire to pursue.

3. Cross off the remaining Goals and fiercely COMMIT to NOT DO them!

This is your WON’T DO List. Don’t let them distract you from accomplishing your top 3 to 5 Goals.

4. Break down your WILL DO Goals into Actions required to accomplish those Goals

One of the big reasons people fail in achieving their goals, besides having too many, is not thinking through and being specific with the Actions, Time and Resources needed.

5. Schedule your Actions onto your Calendar

Once you’ve developed a specific list of actions required to accomplish your goals, put them on your Calendar as commitments to yourself.

6. Execute and track your progress

I can tell who will achieve their goals by observing their actions, not what they say. If you don’t know where you are in your plan and progress, how do you know if you will succeed?

7. Seven daily actions for focus

i. Visualize Your Future Success

Take time each day to close your eyes and imagine in your mind’s eye what life will look like after you’ve achieved your goals.

ii. Review Your WILL DO Goals and Action Plan

Each morning, review your list of WILL DO Goals and the Actions you still need to take to achieve your goals.

iii. Say No to Irrelevant Requests

Be prudent when giving your time to others. Assess the relevance of their requests and how the commitment aligns with your principles, values, and goals.

iv. Don’t give in to your WON’T DO List

You’ve already decided which goals you won’t pursue. Don’t look back at them. Don’t get distracted by them.

v. Challenge those who waste your time

When giving your time to others, be willing to challenge their approach if they are wasting your time. Don’t be a victim of time wasters.

vi. Journal your day and learn

At the end of each day, take time to write how well you progressed your goals in a journal. Use this time of reflection as an opportunity to modify your actions and approach.

vii. Stay in action and don’t quit

People who achieve their goals aren’t necessarily the most talented. Natural ability is important, but persistence is even more critical.
