At first glance this looks like a map of American wilderness, but it is really a map of emptiness measured with surprising precision. Every patch of dark green marks a census block where the reported population is exactly zero, with not a single resident recorded. When the blocks are added together they cover close to half of the entire United States, a reminder that the country's reputation for wide open space is thoroughly deserved. The green pools deepest across the mountain West, the high plains and the deserts of the interior, while the empty spaces shrink away to almost nothing along the crowded eastern seaboard and around the big cities. What remains in white is, in effect, the inhabited United States, a far smaller country hiding inside the familiar outline.
