I watched Team Tapia play baseball tonight! They were kind enough to present me with a team ball signed by everyone on the team!! I’m going to get a collector case for it and keep it on my shelf, because it’s now my most prized sports memorabilia!

Below is some helpful information that might speed up your computer. Like my page and share this post and you'll be entered in a drawing to win a 30GB Encrypted thumb drive. Encrypted thumb drives can't be accessed with out the pin number. You can carry files with you, without worrying about your data being compromised if you lose it. Drawing will be Friday October 6th.

Here's the helpful info:

Is your computer slow? It was fast, but has slowed down a lot.
Many times, this is due to too many items in the temp directory.

Imagine you're at work, and you have a little note book. Through out your day you jot down, notes, ideas, information, things you need for tasks you're performing. If you don't erase things, after couple days, you're going to have a lot of pages of information to flip through to find what you're looking for and it slows you down. A computer can have the same problem. It stores it's little notes in the temp directory. It's supposed to clean itself out at reboot, but crashes happen, programs are written that don't remove their data, programs freeze, and eventually, if you don't manually remove them, there are thousands of files in the temp directory. Making your computer sloooooow waaaay down. So here's the fix:

Fix:

Windows 10: Right click on the start menu, and select run. a little box will appear that says "Open:" to the right of open, in the text box, type "%temp%". (with out the quotes.)

Windows 7: Left click on the start menu. In the start menu that appears, there will be a text box at the bottom. in the text box type "%temp%" (with out the quotes.)

If you only have 2 options when you right click on the start menu, you have windows 7.

This will open an explorer window with a few to a bunch of files. Either click "select all" in the menu at the top of the window or right click and choose "select all"

Press your delete key.

You will get some error messages. As some of the files are needed by currently open programs. Just check the checkbox that says "do this for all items" and click "skip". It will leave any files it actually needs. You should be left with 5-15 items, depending on what applications you have open at the time.

Then voila! You're computer is faster!! This should be done either once a month or once a week, depending on how heavily the computer is used. This fix will work on your home computer or work computer, and as long as you are in the temp directory, You don't have to worry about deleting anything important, because the computer won't let you delete anything important.

There's been a rash of ransom ware viruses lately that has been getting past antivirus programs. These viruses encrypt not only your computer, but data on network shares. Please verify the sender before opening e-mail attachments and check file signatures before installing updates. They're nasty things and they make the writers a lot of money. If you have home computers, please make sure you have a reliable antivirus program and that you perform regular backups. Data that is encrypted by these viruses can not be decrypted, and can only be recovered from a point-in-time backup. The one in the link is disguised by claiming to be a Firefox update.

If you plan on upgrading to Office 2016, keep in mind that Outlook 2016 will not support Exchange 2007. So if you still have Exchange 2007, you'll want to keep Outlook at the earlier version until your Exchange server is upgraded.

I'm noticing a common problem with Outlook this week. After last weeks updates, I've had multiple computers that can no longer open HTML e-mails with graphics with out crashing. If you experience a problem with Outlook crashing when you open HTML e-mails, or attempt to download the graphics, removing the updates KB3097877 & KB3101746 may help. See the following link for more info:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/482486ba-a378-4dcd-bd21-08ae19760b93/crashes-since-111115-updates-in-both-outlook-2010-and-2013-when-viewing-html-emails

Per subject, was finding that specific e-mail were consistently causing Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 to crash. They were always HTML messages, typically the sort of "on sale" e-mail you get from distributors etc that include a lot of tables, images etc.

The Verizon store has a great deal on tablets this month. 50% off. And they waived the activation fee when I asked. Might be an idea for some early Christmas shopping. (iPads are included in this deal.)

Windows 10 is out! And it's FREE for anyone with Windows 7 or 8. You should have an update icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. If not, try running Windows Update in control panel to see if it appears. If it still doesn't, or your computer is joined to a domain, you can try the following steps:
1. Log into the computer as an administrator.
2. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and download the appropriate version By clicking on the blue button at the bottom of the screen.
3. Run the tool and select the Radio button for "Upgrade this computer."
4. Wait for the windows 10 install to download. (up to a couple of hours depending on your ISP).
5. Allow the computer to upgrade.
6. Reboot.

The upgrade goes very smoothly and I haven't had any issues yet. One thing to note though, if you download the Media Creation tool to a USB device. (Like a thumb drive so that you don't need to download it on each computer.) You'll need to copy the tool to the desktop, then unplug the device, then run it from the desktop. The tool will require a license if the USB device is plugged in.

And if you have any issues upgrading, get in touch!
