Compost is an amendment; think of it as a probiotic for your soil. It adds great nutrients, but more importantly it is teeming with bacteria and fungi that form symbiotic relationships with your plants. It also helps soil retain water, build structure, and prevent erosion. Mix into your soil prior to planting or apply 1/4 inch top layer around your plants.
