Some people are hungry and you would never know.

They smile. They go to school. They go to work. They show up for their families. They laugh with friends. They look just like everyone else.

But behind that smile may be a parent wondering how to stretch meals until payday. A child quietly skipping seconds so there will be enough for someone else. A family choosing between groceries and the bills that keep the lights on.

Hunger doesn’t always look hungry.

And that’s why we have to look a little deeper.
Listen a little closer.
Lean in a little further.
And care a little more.

At Catholic Charities Kansas City Serve&Lift Market, we believe our neighbors deserve more than food. They deserve choice, dignity, compassion—and the assurance that they are not alone.

This Hunger Action Month, let’s remember:

You may not always see hunger.
But you can always choose to help. ❤️

HUNGER ACTION MONTH | DAY 1

You may have seen the headlines: Kansas City is experiencing record levels of hunger. But here’s what those headlines don’t show …

They don’t show the faces. The families. The choices. The worry. And the people working every day to make sure our neighbors have enough to eat.

A new report from Kansas City Star is highlighting record levels of hunger in our community as families face SNAP changes and the continued pressure of high grocery prices.

And the numbers behind SNAP tell an important story. Missouri currently has nearly 300,000 households receiving SNAP, with more than 600,000 Missourians relying on the program to help put food on the table.

At Catholic Charities Kansas City Serve&Lift Market, we see what those numbers look like in real life.

They’re parents.
They’re children.
They’re veterans.
They’re seniors.
They’re individuals with disabilities.
They’re WORKING families.
They’re our neighbors.

Food insecurity isn’t an abstract issue. It’s a person standing right next to us.

That’s why Hunger Action Month matters.

Throughout September, I’m going to use this space to talk about hunger—what it looks like, why it happens, what we’re learning from the people we serve, and most importantly, what each of us can do about it.

Because food is more than food.

Food is STABILITY. Food is HEALTH. Food is DIGNITY. Food is HOPE.

And when our neighbors are struggling to put enough food on the table, we all have a role to play.

❤️ Let’s turn awareness into action.

Things have been absolutely B-A-N-A-N-A-S around here lately, but crossing paths with and bringing home these OOAK art class production ceramic banana salt & pepper shakers has brought me such JOY. I like weird stuff and I cannot lie. Thanks to whomever EH might be, I will treasure these until my kids give them away at a garage sale, too. I purchased some vintage Pfaltzgraff for my Thanksgiving table and these were in a broken piece that I almost tossed before looking inside. I know my face lit up and the fella selling the dishes must have thought I was a real freakazoid because I let out quite a squeal. It was not solely justifying my decades-long collection of wine cork hoarrrrrrr, repurposing, but we did get to carve out new banana butt stoppers from a special champs cork in my “collection.” New strange food folk art happiness level unlocked.

Earlier this month, the Van Booven family stopped by the Serve&Lift Market with a generous donation from their garden. What started as a simple gardening project has grown into a meaningful way to provide fresh food for neighbors across our community.

We loved spending time with the Van Boovens and sharing the vision behind the market. They were moved by our mission to provide families with access to fresh, healthy food. We were moved by their giving hearts.

Also where our food comes from.

A little rain couldn’t dampen today’s visit to BoysGrow, where growing hope starts long before market day.

We walked the fields through a shower, and then, just as quickly, the sun broke through the clouds—a perfect reminder that good things keep growing, even after the rain.

We’re grateful for partners like BoysGrow, who cultivate more than fresh produce. They’re growing opportunities, empowering young people, and helping ensure our neighbors have access to healthy, local food at the Serve&Lift Market.

From the farm to the market to our neighbors’ tables, every harvest is made possible by partnerships rooted in hope. Thank you, BoysGrow, for helping nourish our community—rain or shine. 💚
