From rendering to reality. ✨

Two days ago, the design. Yesterday, the build. Tonight, the reveal.

This Benson backyard retreat is built around salvaged antique windows and doors, with stained glass, natural cedar, a teal door with a second life and a porch made for slow mornings. It’s new construction that feels like it’s always been there.

Got a backyard dream? Let us make it a reality. Link in bio.

Dream → design → reality.

A few months ago this was a set of renderings. Today it’s a finished backyard retreat in Benson that looks like it’s been there for decades. That’s exactly what the homeowner asked for.

Every window and door is a salvaged antique. Barnwood doors with stained glass flank the entry and catch the afternoon light, and an old door painted teal opens onto a ramp out back. The new materials are built to last: cedar siding left natural to weather in, TimberTech decking, and a covered porch with a ceiling fan for slow summer mornings.

Inside, there’s a built-in workbench and a custom tool rack. The finishing touch is a tidy box built over the old well pump.

What started as “cozy, quaint, nostalgic, and full of character” is now a place to sit back and enjoy the view.

If you’ve been picturing something for your own backyard, let’s draw it up together.

Here’s what it takes to turn a rendering into something you can stand on.

On this Benson project, we set and leveled the floor system on site with the homeowner there, so she could see exactly where her retreat would sit in the yard. Then came TimberTech porch decking, framed walls and a roof, all sheathed in about two days.

Then came the part that made this build different. The homeowner wanted it to feel like it had always been there, so every window and door is a salvaged antique. No two are the same size, so we waited until the walls were sheathed to set the openings and walked through each one with her first. Some decisions are best made standing in the space.

Next came cedar posts and cedar lap siding. Then the details: barnwood doors set with stained glass, and an old red door that got a coat of teal and a second life as the back entry.

Good design gets you started. Careful building, with the client involved at every step, is what makes the result feel like theirs.

Tomorrow: the reveal.

Every project starts as an idea. This one started as a feeling.

A Benson homeowner came to us wanting a small backyard retreat that felt cozy, quaint, nostalgic and full of character. She wanted a place to sit and take in the view, with her garden tools close at hand.

Before we cut a single board, we designed it together. With 3D renderings we worked through the layout from every angle: a covered porch up front, an enclosed tool shed in back and a lean-to roof. The windows and doors would all be salvaged antiques, chosen for the aged, lived-in character she was after. We even planned for stained glass.

Renderings let you walk around your project before you commit to it. You can change it, move things and rethink it on screen instead of on site.

Over the next few days we’ll show you how this one went from drawing to reality. Stay tuned.

Last week we published honest starting-at costs for the most common renovation projects in the Fuquay-Varina and Wake County market. The most common follow-up question was exactly what we expected:

“Okay, but how do people actually pay for this?”

This week on the blog we answer that question directly — including something we offer that most contractors don’t.

McLeod Contracting Group offers direct access to home improvement financing through HFS Financial, integrated into our project process through JobTread. Fixed rates. No equity required. No appraisal needed. And prequalifying won’t affect your credit score. Check your options here: apply.hfsfinancial.net/prequalification?refer=JobTread

Beyond that we also walk through the full landscape of renovation financing options — HELOCs, home equity loans, cash-out refinancing, construction loans, personal loans, and cash — so you can walk into any lender conversation prepared.

Not financial advice — always speak with your lender before making financing decisions. But knowing the landscape upfront makes every conversation better.

We hear it regularly. A homeowner reaches out excited about their renovation — and their budget is $10,000–$15,000 for a full kitchen or bathroom remodel.

We don't say that to embarrass anyone. The gap between what renovation costs online and what it actually costs in the Fuquay-Varina and Wake County market is real — and it's not the homeowner's fault. Most renovation cost content is national, outdated, or simply doesn't account for what licensed trade work, permits, quality materials, and professional project management actually cost in our area.

So this week we published something most contractors won't — honest, realistic starting-at investment ranges for the projects we complete most often, backed by independent data from the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report for the Raleigh market.

Kitchen renovations. Bathroom remodels. Home additions. Decks and outdoor living. Crawl space work. Real numbers. Honest guidance.

If you're planning a renovation and want to understand what it actually costs before you start calling contractors — this blog is the right place to start.

Your primary bedroom and bathroom should be the most restorative space in your home.

For most homeowners across Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, and Wake County — they're not. A bathroom that was never quite right. A bedroom that functions but never quite restores. A wish list of upgrades that keeps getting pushed to next year.

A master suite transformation changes that. Done well it creates something that goes beyond aesthetics — a space that genuinely restores, that functions exactly the way the people who use it need it to, and that communicates through every finish and every detail that this is a space worth coming home to.

This week on the blog we cover what a primary suite renovation actually involves — the scope, the design decisions, the budget considerations, and why fall is the right time to start planning if you want to enjoy the result by spring.

Of all the rooms in a home, the bathroom shows its age most honestly.

Dated tile. Worn grout. A vanity that hasn't been current in a decade. A shower that works but never quite feels right.

A bathroom remodel is one of the highest-return investments a homeowner in Fuquay-Varina and Wake County can make — and one of the most complex projects to plan correctly. Because bathrooms concentrate more licensed trade work — plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile — into a small footprint than almost any other room in the house.

This week on the blog we cover everything homeowners across Wake, Harnett, and Johnston Counties need to know before starting a bathroom renovation — from scope and budget to waterproofing, permits, and how to choose the right contractor before you sign anything.

Most large commercial contractors are built for big projects — warehouse buildouts, corporate offices, large-scale developments. Their processes, their crews, and their communication styles reflect that scale.

But what about the small business owner opening their first coffee shop? The boutique retailer building out a new location? The church refreshing their fellowship hall? The salon owner who needs a space that reflects their brand?

These clients deserve the same quality, the same clear communication, and the same personal attention as any major project. And that's exactly the gap McLeod Contracting Group was built to fill.

This week on the blog we cover what a small business upfit or commercial buildout actually involves — and why the contractor you choose matters as much for a small business as it does for a home renovation.
