When Ilona Maher was 17 years old, she picked up a rugby ball for the first time.
She said it fit her body "like a glove."
That instinct turned out to be one of the great understatements in recent sports history.
Maher grew up in Burlington, Vermont — a multi-sport kid raised by parents who never once told her to tone it down. When a coach suggested she slow her pitching during a softball game, her father stepped in:
"No. Don't change anything."
She didn't.
By the time she reached Quinnipiac University, she had become one of the most dominant collegiate rugby players in America — earning three consecutive NIRA All-American selections, helping her team win three straight national championships, and taking home the Most Outstanding Player award in the championship tournament.
She did all of this while earning a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Not sports management. Not communications. Nursing. Because Ilona Maher understood from the beginning that an athlete's career has an end date, and a person needs more than one way to change the world.
After college, she joined the USA Rugby Sevens program and competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — where the team fell short of a medal. Instead of retreating, she turned her platform into something.
She started talking.
On TikTok and Instagram, she shared the reality of Olympic life — the grind, the sacrifice, the mental health battles that polished highlight reels never show. She talked about the pay inequity in women's rugby. She talked about body image in a sports world that had long demanded female athletes shrink themselves to fit a narrow definition of beauty.
She was 6 feet tall with broad shoulders and the frame of someone built to tackle people at full speed.
She called it beautiful.
"With my broad shoulders, being big can be beautiful," she said. "And it doesn't take away from your femininity."
Millions of young women heard that and exhaled.
Then came Paris 2024.
Ilona Maher helped lead Team USA to a bronze medal in rugby sevens — the first Olympic medal in the history of U.S. women's rugby.
She had nearly a million followers going into Paris.
She left with over nine million.
What followed was extraordinary. She appeared in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit — broad shoulders, Olympic medal, and an expression that said she had earned every inch of that moment. She competed on Dancing with the Stars, reached the finale, finished as runner-up, and dedicated her final performance to showing the world that the same woman who hits opponents at full speed on a rugby pitch can also be graceful, feminine, and joyful.
She was named to Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2025. USA Today named her one of its Women of the Year.
She signed a professional contract with the Bristol Bears in England's top women's rugby league.
She still has her nursing license.
She still lifts weights and posts it without apology.
She still tells young women — directly, clearly, without caveats — that it is okay to be proud of what you've done. That it is okay to believe you deserve something because you put in the work.
"It's okay to be proud of what you've done," she said. "It's okay to believe you deserve something because you've put in the work for it."
She picked up rugby at 17.
She changed what millions of young women believe is possible at 27.
