Grass Valley, California recently hosted the Reclaiming the Sierra Conference, a conference held yearly by The Sierra Fund to address Historical Mining Impacts within our watershed.

The Sierra Fund, a nonprofit organization with the mission of protecting and restoring the resiliency of Sierra Nevada ecosystems and communities, launched its Headwater Mercury Source Reduction project in 2017 to promote region-wide and multidisciplinary collaboration in abating mercury contamination “from the Sierra to Sea.”

Breaking News: Yuba Salmon Score Legal Victory at the Ninth Circuit!

Last week, SYRCL’s partner organization Friends of the River scored a key legal victory for Yuba salmon and steelhead at the Ninth Circuit. The Court declared that the National Marine Fisheries Service (the Service) needs to review whether two dams on the Yuba River affect threatened Chinook salmon, steelhead and green sturgeon.

“We are excited to hear about the recent decision at the 9th Circuit,” said Melinda Booth. “On behalf of SYRCL, the salmon and the Yuba River watershed – we are grateful to Friends of the River and attorneys for their leadership and advocacy on this important issue.”

Here in Nevada City, the indigenous Nisenan Tribe are still fighting for recognition. May we learn from the past to build a brighter future together.

The Nisenan tribe of the California Central Valley are fighting to regain recognition from the federal government.

The yellow sediment plume in the Yuba River has dissipated and the river has been declared safe to swim in again! Thank you to all those involved in responding to this situation and caring for our natural resources.

"We are grateful for the County's rapid response to our report of the plume on Friday afternoon. Our history of mining makes our watershed especially vulnerable. It's when, not if, a catastrophic event will occur unless we take needed action and continue restoring our watershed," said Melinda Booth, South Yuba River Citizen League’s Executive Director.

The SAFE Banking Act is big news for the cannabis community throughout the United States! By supporting fair banking practices, we can ensure our local cannabis businesses are safe, secure, and can flourish.

This is the first piece of pro-cannabis legislation to receive a hearing, to pass a markup, and to get a vote in a chamber of Congress, passing the House by a nonpartisan 321-103 vote!
