As we approach our 9th year in serving the typewriter community we want to thank all of our loyal customers over the years, whether you sent us 1 platen or dozens or in some cases, hundreds. We are a small US based manufacturer located in Western NY so the manufacturing environment is not always easy in the face of foreign competition and government regulations. No order is too small and we appreciate every one we receive. So again, THANK YOU!
Over the years we have been asked about using colored rubber on typewriter platens. As we have strived to keep prices down in the face of all the labor intensive work involved in our process we have typically adhered to the old Henry Ford quote, "You can have any color you want as long as it is black." Black is the most common color for the type of raw rubber we use in the proper durometer (hardness) and we always have it in stock. White would be the next most common rubber color but we typically do not get many request for rollers of any sort---typewriter or the numerous other roller types we do for white or any other color for that matter in this hard a durometer. Therefore other than once where we have had orange in for another customer's roller work we have never ventured from black for typewriters.
We are changing that in 2021! Working with our terrific supplier of raw rubber compounds we now can offer White, Blue, Red, Orange, Yellow, Purple, Pink and Gray. What the specific pantones can be we will sort out but for now we are looking for feedback on whether this is an offerring our customers may want to consider.
To make this work and try to keep within our current cost structure we would ideally need 15 to 20 platens to be done in a specific color--this allows us to purchase and use up a minimum order weight of that specific material. So if we can understand the interest level we may add this to our list of offerings. It may be that we only offer specific colors for a specific time frame during the year and then get the word out that, for example, you want the Smith Corona done in blue now is the time to get us your platen! But if there is enough interest that may change. Being small affords us great flexibility!
As many of you know we are not big on social media platforms so we will rely on some of our typewriter fanatics here to get the word out to the numerous Typewriter Group sites out there to spread the word and give us feedback.
