1VMs, check your mailboxes! 📬 The Texas A&M Chapter of the Veterinary Business Management Association is BACK! 🎉

Contrary to popular belief, VBMA isn’t just for those who want to become practice owners (although we definitely have resources for that, too!). VBMA is about developing business and professional skills that can benefit every veterinarian, no matter what career path you choose.

Through VBMA, you can learn how to:
• Manage coworkers and navigate workplace dynamics
• Make smarter financial decisions and manage your personal finances
• Negotiate a strong starting salary
• Develop essential communication and leadership skills
• Better understand the business side of veterinary medicine

We’re incredibly excited to kick off another amazing year and can’t wait to welcome plenty of new members! Whether you dream of owning a practice or simply want to become a more well-rounded veterinarian, VBMA has something for you.

We’ll see you at the Vetiquette Dinner and our first meeting! 🐾⚕️

It’s August, and with that comes another exciting semester with Texas A&M VBMA!

We wrapped up last semester with two very special guests: Dr. Norwood and Dr. Mensik, co-founders of the original VMBS Business Club and thus two of the people responsible for laying the foundation that would eventually become our chapter of VBMA. Dr. Mensik practices at Country Creek Animal Hospital in Allen, Texas, and Dr. Norwood practices at Ponder Veterinary and Northlake Pet Hospitals.

We are incredibly grateful for them taking the time to share their invaluable knowledge and experience with us!

Howdy from Bryan, Texas!

This month the Texas A&M chapter of the Veterinary Business Management Association () led its inaugural Wet Lab Event: Dinner & Doctors. We’re incredibly grateful for the 70+ member turnout, our incredible speakers from all walks of veterinary private practice, and an overall wonderful night together in historic Downtown Bryan, Texas.

A special thank you to Dr. Morehead, Dr. Whitehill, Dr. Finch, and Dr. Hutka for sharing their extensive expertise across private practice and business ownership.

We can’t wait to share what’s in store for next year — stay tuned!

This year’s VBMA Workshop takes on a new look. Texas A&M VBMA Presents: Dinner With Doctors.

The first 75 students to sign up via our email will have the opportunity to learn from, ask questions, and network with professionals from across small animal, food animal, equine, and zoo medicine. In addition to amazing food and veterinary knowledge, attendees will have access to professional headshots, free raffles (including FIGS gift cards), and a stunning location in Downtown Bryan, Texas.

We look forward to seeing y’all there!

A special thank you to Care Credit () for joining us today!

Understanding generational differences is essential for veterinary teams to effectively communicate financial options and improve client acceptance of care. Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z differ in their financial attitudes, technology use, and spending behaviors on veterinary care, with older generations valuing trust, stability, and in-person communication, while younger generations prioritize convenience, digital tools, transparency, and flexible payment options. The concept of the client journey, from awareness to support, highlights how each generation navigates this process with unique motivations, questions, and barriers. By recognizing these differences and tailoring communication, payment solutions, and touchpoints (such as online platforms, staff interactions, and follow-ups), veterinary providers can better meet client needs, build trust, and ultimately increase the likelihood that clients will proceed with recommended treatments.

A very special thank you to Texas Group One for sharing with us expertise on hiring, managing, and maintaining staff and leadership!

You can find all kinds of advice on the internet. Here is a summary of what Texas Group One recommend based on their own personal experiences:

• Always be in hiring mode. If a great applicant comes in, consider finding a spot for them even if you don’t have an obvious opening.
• Look for people with good personality more than technical skills. When you have a candidate, hold an observational interview so you can get to know them and they can see what the job is really like.
• Make sure you have clear job descriptions, and be ready to invest time in training new hires.
• Recognize that owners don’t have to be managers.
• Put the right people in leadership roles and have a clear organizational chart.
• If you don’t have a leadership role that fits someone, instead give them special responsibilities.
• Regular reviews and check-ins are important to helping staff succeed.
• Focus on coaching to fix deficiencies rather than reprimanding.
• Hold regular staff meeting to keep communication open. The most important factor for staff retention is culture. The owner sets the tone here. Make sure you don’t have factions or cliques among your staff. Take time for fun and philanthropic activities together. Use staff to their full capabilities so they feel their jobs are rewarding. Don’t be afraid to fire someone if they are ruining your culture.
