It's Peach Season! 🍑

August is peak peach season, and there's nothing quite like picking a sun-ripened peach right from your own backyard. Sweet, juicy, and bursting with flavor, homegrown peaches are perfect for fresh eating, baking into pies and cobblers, canning, or making homemade jam.

At Chief River Nursery, we offer two excellent peach varieties:

🌳 Reliance Peach – One of the most cold-hardy peach trees available, making it a great choice for northern growers. It produces medium-sized, sweet, freestone peaches that are perfect for fresh eating and preserving.

🌳 Red Haven Peach – A longtime favorite for its delicious flavor, dependable harvests, and beautiful red-blushed fruit. This freestone variety is excellent for fresh eating, baking, freezing, and canning.

🌳 Tree Spotlight: Hickory 🌳

Hickory trees are more than just beautiful shade trees—they're a living piece of North American history.

Long before modern agriculture, hickory nuts were one of the continent's most important food sources. Indigenous communities carefully managed and protected hickory groves, relying on their nutritious harvests for generations. Today, these remarkable trees continue to provide food for wildlife, produce incredibly strong wood, and offer stunning golden fall color.

Whether you're planting a Shagbark Hickory, Shellbark Hickory, or another native species, you're investing in a tree that can thrive for generations while supporting birds, squirrels, and countless other native wildlife!

🌿 Shrub Highlight: Black Chokeberry (Aronia)!

Looking for a hardy native shrub that's as beautiful as it is beneficial? Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is a fantastic choice!

In spring, it produces clusters of delicate white flowers that attract pollinators. By late summer, the shrub is loaded with deep purple-black berries, and in fall, its foliage transforms into brilliant shades of scarlet and orange.

While the berries are quite tart when eaten fresh, they're packed with powerful antioxidants and are perfect for:
🫐 Jams and jellies
🍷 Homemade w**e
🥧 Pies and baked goods
🥤 Smoothies
🧃 Juice and syrup

Black chokeberries are considered one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits, making them a favorite for anyone looking to add nutritious, homegrown ingredients to their pantry.

Easy to grow, adaptable to many soil types, and loved by wildlife, Black Chokeberry is an excellent addition to edible landscapes, windbreaks, and native plantings.

Have you noticed the bright green growth popping up on your evergreens lately? That’s candling season!

In spring and early summer, many conifers put on a flush of new growth called “candles.” These soft, lighter-colored shoots are a sign that your tree is actively growing and establishing itself.

Depending on the species, these candles will gradually harden off and become the next section of branches and needles. It’s one of the most exciting times of year to watch your evergreens grow! 🌱
