I recently had the opportunity to join Bryan Devore Realty Group - DRE 01397835 on the Bryan Devore Connection podcast to talk about the work I do through Halo Senior Living Services.

We talked about how I help seniors and their families navigate assisted living, memory care, and residential care options, making an overwhelming process clearer, more personal, and less stressful.

We also discussed something I’m very passionate about: the power of strong industry partnerships. Supporting seniors well takes a team. I’m grateful to work alongside trusted professionals in home care, hospice, financial planning, elder law, move management, real estate, and care management to help families access the right resources at the right time.

For me, this work is about more than finding a place. It’s about listening, advocating, connecting families with trusted resources, and helping them make difficult decisions with confidence and peace of mind.

I was at one of the lowest points in my life.

I was going through a bad divorce. I had been laid off from my job. I had to move to my parents’ house with my 3 children.

My life had been turned upside down, and I needed a job. Stat.

Then I saw a job posting at a senior living community.

I had never worked in senior living before. It was an entry-level position, and the pay was low. On paper, it didn’t make a lot of sense.

I had already built a career in marketing. Starting over was the last thing I wanted to do.

But something in my soul told me I needed to apply.

So I listened.

I got the job, and what I thought was just a way to get back on my feet became something completely different.

For the first time, my work felt like more than a job.

I found so much fulfillment supporting older adults and their families through a highly emotional time. They were downsizing, selling homes they had lived in for years, and moving into senior living.

Then one day, I met a local placement advisor.

She came in with her client for a tour. I remember thinking, "Wait. That’s a thing? You can have your own clients and tour different communities with them instead of working for just one community?" My mind was blown thinking of how many more people I could help and serve!

The seed was planted.

I knew that was what I wanted to do.

I also knew I had a lot more to learn.

So I took a position with a national placement company. Over almost two years, I learned the business and built relationships with senior living communities throughout San Diego County, from the border to Temecula to the coast.

And I started seeing how I wanted to do things differently.

I wanted the experience to be more personal. More in-person. More high-touch. I wanted families to have compassion and empathy beside them while they made these hard decisions.

So I took another leap.

Two and a half years ago, I started Halo Senior Living Services.

Today, life looks completely different.

Business is good. I’m serving my community. My kids are grown and blazing their own paths. And I'm doing life with my love, Mark.

Looking back, the job that made the least sense on paper helped lead me straight to my passion and purpose.

So if you’re in a season where life feels completely turned upside down, I hope my story gives you a little hope.

Maybe instead of asking, "Why is this happening to me?”

Ask, "Why is this happening for me?"

And when something in your soul tells you to take a step toward a dream, even when it doesn’t make perfect sense, maybe it’s worth listening.

Today is National Nonprofit Day, and I want to recognize a few organizations that I’m personally involved with and believe in wholeheartedly❤️

Making a difference doesn’t always mean writing a big check. We can give our time, treasure and talents and all three matter.

This one is especially near and dear to my heart. My family has been involved with the SDGC since before I was born, and for generations of CHamoru families in San Diego, it truly has been our “Home Away from Home.” Having a place to gather, celebrate our traditions and pass our culture to the next generation is something worth protecting.

Looking for a meaningful way to support seniors in our community?

I’m proud to serve on the board of Agape Helpers, a nonprofit dedicated to helping seniors in need access support, resources, and services that can make a real difference in their lives.

Many older adults are living on limited incomes, without family nearby, or simply don’t have the resources to get the help they need. Agape Helpers works to bridge that gap by connecting seniors with compassionate people and professionals who are willing to help.

There are several ways you can get involved:

❤️ Volunteer your time
❤️ Donate to help us continue serving seniors in need
❤️ Become an Agape Pro and provide your professional service or expertise to a senior who may not otherwise be able to afford it

If you’re a business owner or professional who serves older adults, becoming an Agape Pro is a wonderful way to use what you already do to give back to the senior community.

We’re hosting an informational and awareness event on Saturday, September 12 in Encinitas for anyone who would like to learn more about Agape Helpers, meet the people involved, and discover ways to support our mission.

Great SAN DIEGO COUNTY COUNCIL ON AGING meeting yesterday at Lantern Crest Senior Living!

AARP presented and I honestly had no idea how many programs and resources they have available for older adults and their families.

One thing they shared really stuck with me: social isolation can have the same negative impact on your health as SMOKING 15 ci******es a day.

I see this so much with the seniors and families I work with.

Mom or Dad is living alone. The family is worried because they’re becoming more isolated, not getting out as much, not seeing people regularly…but they are fighting HARD to stay in their home.

And I get it. Home is familiar. It represents independence.

But sometimes I think we focus so much on whether someone is able to stay home that we forget to ask whether staying home is actually giving them the best quality of life.

Are they safe? Are they eating well? Are they seeing people? Do they have things to look forward to? Are they thriving or are they isolated?

There’s no one right answer for every family. But isolation absolutely needs to be part of the conversation when we talk about aging in place.

I just read the sweetest story.

A man in Nebraska couldn’t reach his grandmother during a hurricane. Police couldn’t help. The fire department couldn’t help.

So he ordered her a pizza.

When the Papa John’s driver arrived, they put the phone to her ear so he could hear her voice and know she was okay. ❤️🍕

It made me think…

Today, families don’t have to rely on a pizza delivery to check on a loved one. There are amazing technologies and services that provide peace of mind while still respecting an older adult’s privacy and independence.

One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that I only help families find assisted living.

The truth is, I help families navigate aging whether that’s finding the right senior living community or helping someone safely remain at home with the right resources, technology, and support.
