Your biggest business decisions are people decisions.

Where do I find the right people? Who should I hire? How do I maximize the performance of the people I already have? Who should I promote? Do I have the right people in the right roles? Leaders make these decisions every day—often relying on experience, intuition, and incomplete information.

Built on nearly two decades of research and thousands of behavioral assessments, ExsellerateInsights™ is a Performance Intelligence™ platform designed to bring objective intelligence to those decisions—helping leaders understand what a role requires, what each person naturally brings, where the two align, and where risk or opportunity may exist. Because the goal isn’t more people data. It’s better people decisions.

When most people hear the title Finding Gems, they assume it’s a book about hiring.

It isn’t.

It’s about recognizing the extraordinary potential that already exists within every person.

A rough sapphire doesn’t become valuable because it changes what it is. It becomes valuable when someone recognizes its true nature, reveals its beauty, and places it where it can shine.

I believe people are much the same.

Over the past five decades, I’ve studied exceptional performers across a wide variety of professions. One discovery became impossible to ignore: extraordinary performance rarely begins with trying to become someone else. It begins with understanding the unique behavioral strengths you already possess and finding an environment where those strengths are naturally valued.

That’s the real message of Finding Gems.

It’s not just about helping organizations find the right people.

It’s about helping people discover where they naturally thrive.

Because the greatest opportunity isn’t changing who you are.

It’s discovering the value of who you’ve been all along.

Behavior predicts potential.
Alignment predicts performance.

For much of our lives, we’re encouraged to pursue someone else’s definition of success—a certain career, income, title, or status. While those achievements can be meaningful, they don’t always lead to fulfillment. I’ve met many people who looked successful from the outside yet felt disconnected from the work they did every day.

One of the most important discoveries from my research is that each of us is born with a unique combination of natural behavioral strengths. We aren’t all designed to lead in the same way, solve problems the same way, or build relationships the same way. Yet we often spend years trying to become what we think success should look like instead of understanding who we naturally are.

I’ve come to believe that success isn’t something you chase—it’s something you discover. It begins when you recognize your natural strengths and intentionally align them with work that values those strengths. That’s where confidence grows, contribution becomes meaningful, and extraordinary performance begins.

Behavior predicts potential.

After interviewing and behaviorally assessing thousands of top performers here is my take-away. Every one of us enters the world with a unique combination of natural and measurable behavioral strengths that intensify over time.

Some people are energized by leading, others by serving. Some naturally build relationships, while others thrive on solving complex problems. Some love structure and precision, while others are driven by creativity and innovation. These aren’t simply learned skills—they’re part of how we’re naturally wired or encoded. They shape what energizes us, what comes naturally, and where we’re most likely to thrive.

I believe one of life’s greatest journeys is discovering where those natural behaviors align with the work we’re called to do.

When who you naturally are matches what your role naturally requires, work becomes more than a job—it becomes meaningful. Perhaps that’s what people have been trying to describe all along when they say, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Maybe it isn’t just about passion.

Perhaps it’s about alignment.

For years, I believed exceptional performance came primarily from better training, greater experience, or stronger motivation.

Then I discovered something that changed the way I looked at people and work.

Every role rewards a particular pattern of natural behaviors. At the same time, every person possesses a unique and measurable pattern of behavioral strengths.

Talent matters. Training matters. Experience matters. But none of them guarantees exceptional performance.

Extraordinary performance doesn’t happen because someone is simply talented. It happens when who they naturally are aligns with what the role naturally requires.

That discovery became the foundation for Finding Gems.

The book is not simply about hiring better people. It is about helping people discover where their natural strengths are most likely to be valued, energized, and fully expressed.

Perhaps the old saying, “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life,” is not only about passion.

Perhaps it is about alignment.

One of the most meaningful discoveries from my research wasn’t about hiring—it was about relationships.

Each of us experiences the world through our own natural behavioral lens. The way we communicate, solve problems, make decisions, and respond to change feels completely natural to us. But the people around us often experience the very same situation through an entirely different lens.

That realization changed how I lead, how I coach, and even how I relate to my family and friends.

Sometimes the greatest breakthrough isn’t changing another person.

It’s finally understanding why they see the world differently than you do.

Behavior creates awareness.
Understanding creates connection.

For decades, organizations have invested billions in understanding customers, markets, operations, and financial performance.

Yet the single greatest driver of organizational success has remained largely invisible…

Human Performance.

Today, I’m excited to introduce ExsellerateInsights™—the first Performance Intelligence™ platform designed to help organizations move beyond instinct and begin making people decisions with confidence.

ExsellerateInsights™ transforms behavioral science into practical intelligence that helps organizations:

◆ Define what success truly looks like in every role.

◆ Predict who is naturally aligned to succeed.

◆ Find high-potential candidates from adjacent industries and roles using AI-powered behavioral sourcing.

◆ Generate customized interview questions based on each candidate’s unique behavioral profile while objectively capturing and scoring interview responses.

◆ Coach every employee based on how they’re uniquely wired.

Because extraordinary performance isn’t random.

It’s measurable. It’s predictable. And now, it’s actionable.

Discover Potential. Navigate Excellence. Achieve Extraordinary.

Have you ever had a job that felt like a perfect fit—or one that clearly wasn’t? What made the difference?

One of the biggest surprises from my research came after studying thousands of exceptional performers across dozens of industries.

I discovered that every job consistently rewards certain natural behaviors. The behaviors that make someone extraordinary in sales are often different from those required to excel in engineering, nursing, teaching, customer service, or leadership.

At the same time, every person possesses a unique and measurable pattern of natural behaviors.

That’s when everything began to make sense.

Exceptional performance isn’t simply about hiring talented people. It’s about aligning a person’s natural behavioral strengths with the behavioral demands of the role.

Think about the old saying: “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Perhaps what people are really describing isn’t passion. It’s alignment.

When who you naturally matches what your work naturally requires, work becomes energizing, performance becomes more consistent, and extraordinary results. There’s less friction, greater enjoyment and you love what you are doing.

That’s when I realized: Behavior predicts potential. Alignment predicts performance.

For more than twenty years, I studied exceptional performers. I scientifically measured their behavioral traits, motivations, and decision-making styles, then tracked their performance over time. I expected to discover that the highest performers had simply received better training or better coaching.

The data pointed somewhere else.

Again and again, I found individuals whose natural behavioral patterns already aligned with the demands of their roles. Training sharpened their skills. Coaching accelerated their growth. But neither created the behaviors that made them exceptional in the first place.

That changed the way I think about hiring.

Perhaps the greatest challenge isn’t teaching people to become someone they’re not.

Perhaps it’s recognizing who they already are.

That realization became one of the foundational discoveries behind Finding Gems.

Because after studying thousands of exceptional performers, one conclusion became impossible to ignore:

Success leaves clues.
