Big news from Cal! The Haas School of Business will become a 4-year Undergraduate degree. Most UC’s do not have “Business” in the traditional sense (all of them have Economics which is quite different). Previously, undergraduate admissions to Haas happened after a student’s 2nd year (a very competitive process). But soon, freshman applicants can apply as a Business major at Cal.

Berkeley Haas today announced that its two-year undergraduate business program will become a four-year program thanks to alumni donors.

This is a post from 2016 - around the time of the last Olympics. It popped up in my FB “memories” and deserves a re-post. Written by the Director of Admission at Georgia Tech. It is blunt, funny and informative! Keep in mind GT’s admit rate is now 14% for out-of -state students.

It’s Not Fair!! I’ve been watching the Olympics a lot lately both at home and in the office (don’t worry tax payers, I’m only viewing at lunch, or when slowly meandering pas…

This is a fascinating article highlighting the inequities of higher education. Calling Harvard's record low 3.4% admission rate a sign of "institutional failure", the author, Jeffrey Selingo takes a deep and interesting dive - excellent read!

Their minuscule admissions rates are a sign of failure, not success.

Great article tackling many myths about the college admission process.

Great article tackling many myths about the college admission process.

There are brain-eating fallacies and delusions in college admission that need to die. I asked my colleagues, the experts in admission, to share some of these refuted—yet perpetuated—assumptions.

This Wall Street Journal article about the ways colleges may need to change their evaluation techniques for applicants in the Covid-19 world was fascinating. Focusing on obvious metrics like test scores and GPA’s will be tough this year. My favorite quote, “Too often colleges have measured what’s easily measurable and not what’s meaningful for success.” Focusing on how students spend their time and learning about their traits like character, empathy, self awareness, and problem solving abilities will take longer in the evaluation process but may turn out to be a better way to evaluate students overall.

Lockdowns have disrupted standardized tests and grades, forcing schools to consider a range of other approaches for selecting students.

UC’s online high school, Scout, offers classes, including AP and Honors. Scout was originally designed to help educationally underserved students. With the current situation, I wonder if districts will adopting their already established lesson plans. Will be interesting to watch!

Free online college prep course provider UC Scout wasn't built for this crisis — but it has turned out to be an indispensable tool for handling it.

I love this article from Madeline Levine (the Marin Psychologist/Speaker/Author of ‘The Price of Privilege’). The fact that there is not one route to success. The term “curious wanderers” is perfect!
