Pickup or go online to Upper Westside Atlanta Magazine upperwestsideatlanta.com and check out the history of Atlanta’s historic written by Calhoun Preservation’s Kelly Calhoun - This textile manufacturing facility was constructed "6 miles outside Atlanta" along the Chattahoochee River. The company constructed over 100 homes (mostly duplexes and triplexes) to house its owners. B’s’s all team, a nine-hole golf course, church, schools, and other amenities supported this environmentally sustainable (at the time) community! Today, the mill is gone but Whittier Mill Village continues to flourish as a living historic neighborhood!

Welcome to the upcoming Historic Tax Credit project in Lake Charles, Louisiana: the former Knights of Columbus Hall no. 1207! Built 1925- Designed by architect Roderick Sheldon McCook (1889 Philadelphia - 1949 Lake Charles). The Catholic Diocese sold the building to investors who intend to renovate it back to its glory.

Largely intact since construction!! What a great building to perfectly adapt back into public use!

What a PHENOMENAL meeting updating the Upper Westside Atlanta community on the history and future planning for the site (1881-2002) and the project. Community members gathered at Agape Youth & Family Center - Atlanta on March 7 to learn about the significance of the Chattahoochee Brick Company property and the vision for its transformation into a that honors its past while creating opportunities for reflection, recreation, and connection to the river.

Plans for the site include the creation of a park and greenspace, along with a memorial that will acknowledge the people who suffered under the system at the brick works (lasting 1881-1908). The project is also closely connected to the broader Atlanta RiverLands initiative with Trust for Public Land, which seeks to develop a continuous trail along the east bank of the ChattahoocheeRiver. The goal is to create a safe, accessible, and enjoyable riverfront corridor that links communities while expanding opportunities for outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.

invited me and other contributors ( Office of Design Jones Archaeology ) to share historical context, research, and community engagement resources related to these efforts. The upcoming April issue of the magazine will include a written history of the Chattahoochee Brick Company, providing readers with deeper insight into the site’s complex past and its significance within Atlanta’s industrial and social history.

Community engagement remains a key part of the planning process. The next public meeting will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, and residents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the project and share their input as plans continue to develop.

Upper Westside Atlanta Magazine - January 2026 Launch Party hosted at Metro Bottle by FABULOUS EDITOR & PUBLISHER Shannon Doyle Bell and ADVERTISING CONSULTANT GENIUS Emily Boyle - in the words of our editors note, many of us “have planted roots in the neighborhoods of Atlanta’s Upper Westside and have witnessed its tremendous growth. Our team believed that time was right to create a publication that celebrates the history, residence, business owners, community groups, and culture that defined this region of our city. It has been a true pleasure to see this publication come to fruition.”

In December, I was invited to come on board to help narrate the histories of Atlanta’s Upper Westside—an opportunity that quickly led me to one of the area’s most remarkable local researchers, “Riverside Kate,” also known as Kathy Hearn. For our debut article, we took a broad, sweeping approach to introduce readers to the meaning, origins, and layered story of the Upper Westside. Drawing on Kate’s decades-long research and extraordinary personal collections, we were able to craft a narrative that we believe will shock ⚡️, surprise 😮, and awe 🫢—and, above all, instill a deep sense of pride in this incredible place.

You can pick up the magazine and read articles including the feature article “Rooted in Atlanta: Neighbors, Carl and Cherie Hill, honor their past.” As well as the entrepreneurial icon George McKerrow of Ted's Montana Grill, Meet the butcher Mark Frazie, Muralist Lenia Castro, as well as the amazing advertisements from the local businesses that made this publication possible: The Companion, Big Easy Grille, Ted's Montana Grill Westside ATL, Frazie's Meat & Market, Buckhead Theatre, Metro Bottle, Westside Pizza, Nuevo Laredo Cantina, Marlow's Tavern, The Woodall, Henri's Deli & Bakery, and more!

Slice, Slice, History! 🍕✨(sound up for first slide to hear a local cat-calling me from his car 🤩😂)
Did you know your favorite late-night bite in Baton Rouge is steeped in local history? Schlittz & Giggles isn’t just about epic NY-style pizza and good vibes—it’s part of the city’s story! 📜🏙️
Here’s the deal:
📍 The Historic Taylor Building: We sling slices inside the iconic Taylor Building on Third Street, a true downtown gem built way back in 1924! Imagine all the secrets these walls hold... probably just a lot of previous pizza orders, honestly.
🕰️ Decades of Downtown Vibes: Before we brought the thin-crust revolution, this spot was home to Mortorano’s. We’ve kept the spirit of downtown dining alive and kicking since we opened our doors in late 2007/early 2008!
🔄 A Baton Rouge Legacy: From its early days with co-founder Jack Warner (yes, of Walk-On’s fame!) to brief ownership changes and back again, this place has serious local roots and is here to stay.
So next time you grab that perfect slice or late-night munchie, remember you’re eating a little piece of Baton Rouge history!
Tag your crew who needs a history lesson (and some pizza) ASAP! 👇

Congratulations 🍾 to the St Landry Parish Office of Economic Development. They commissioned CalPres to expand the 1989-nominated Opelousas Historic District. As of the December 4, 2025 National Register Review Committee meeting of Louisiana, the FABULOUS committee voted unanimously to pass the state level of approval. Now onward to the National Park Service for final review. This expansion will allow over 200 buildings in the district to receive national recognition for its local contribution to commerce, architecture and culture; as well as State and Federal Historic Tax Credits! #
