Growing up on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, I learned pretty early that life wasn't always going to be comfortable, convenient, or easy. There were chores to do, animals to care for, and problems that needed solving whether we felt like dealing with them or not.
My father had very little patience for excuses. He believed that learning to handle life's challenges was one of the greatest gifts he could give his children. At the time, I didn't always appreciate those lessons! But looking back, I realize how much that upbringing shaped the woman I became.
Over the years, I've faced some pretty devastating circumstances. There were times when I would have loved to pull the covers over my head and tell the world to go away.
And believe me, there is a time for rest, healing, and being gentle with ourselves.
But there is also a time when we have to stop babying ourselves and remember what we're made of.
I've learned that the more excuses we make for ourselves, the smaller our world becomes.
We start avoiding the uncomfortable conversations, postponing important decisions, and convincing ourselves that tomorrow will somehow be a better day to take action.
And before we know it, we've traded our potential for our comfort.
One of the greatest lessons life has taught me is that YOU DON'T BUILD CONFIDENCE BY AVOIDING HARD THINGS. YOU BUILD IT BY PROVING TO YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN HANDLE THEM.
Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for yourself is give yourself a good old-fashioned kick in the pants and GET MOVING!
You are probably a whole lot stronger, smarter, and more capable than you've been giving yourself credit for.
Don't let your excuses convince you otherwise.
