It can be difficult to transition to the school year normality, and Organization Pending has three simple Back-to-School Tips to help set up the year for success.

* Establish a nightly routine of putting items back, and getting backpacks, lunches, instruments, and sports equipment ready for the next day.

* Use the week before school to shift the internal “wake up clock” back to regular if needed.

* Discuss the school year and extracurriculars, and set up a homework routine ahead of time.

“Progress is progress is progress.”

This summer, I’ve had the privilege of working with several families in pursuit of whole-home decluttering and organizing goals.

Some homes have small children or teens, while others are empty nesters. Some clients I see monthly, others have plans to move, and most schedule as they’re able to find time. Some clients I work with one-on-one, or sessions will be with the whole family - some clients work on other projects in the home while I’m there, doubling their decluttering efforts.

But the commonalities outweigh the differences.
* After living in a home for around 10 years, it’s more difficult to see new potential organization.
* Without defined zones in the house, and established homes for items, flat surfaces and large undefined spaces become catch-alls.
* Some outgoing donations, recycling, and items for non-landfill disposal were waiting to leave the home already, making for some easy decisions.
* My car was filled each session with donations, recycling, and items for non-landfill disposal.
* Clients said they didn’t know where to start, and their homes felt overwhelming.

Clutter happens in every home as a natural course of events, and without routine decluttering and organizing, it can start to feel overwhelming.

This week, see your spaces with new eyes. Is that underlying and heightened anxiety due to the clutter? Many people describe physical clutter as visual clutter that becomes internal stress.

But what is clutter? Postponed decisions. I’ll open that mail later, we’ll find a good spot for this later, I’m not sure where to put this so I’ll do it later…every “later” decision turns that item to clutter. And with sensory adaptation, we stop registering the clutter, but we’re still seeing it, and our bodies are still registering the stress of an unfinished to do list.

* This garage was decluttered in November, and completed in April. In between, the client was able to schedule a junk hauler, purchase product recommendations, and continue home organizing goals with Organization Pending in other parts of the home over the winter months.

* Parents know the difficulties of getting things back into their places. With kid-focused organizing on the most accessible areas, clean up time is cut in half.
