Does a snowstorm = snow fleas?❄️🦟
As you stay warm and cozy in your home during this snowstorm, you might see tiny black specks hopping on the snow. Don’t panic, they aren’t fleas, and they don’t bite and are harmless to people and pets. Cold weather and fresh snow bring them to the surface, where they bounce around and feed on decaying plants. Pretty cool right?

A few fun facts about box elder beetles!

-Box elder beetles get their name after the box elder tree. This is a type of maple tree that acts as a primary host.
-In the spring and summer, box elder beetles live and breed indoors. They lay their eggs on the leaves and bark on the trees they choose. Nymphs then hatch and feed on the leaves and seeds until they complete their development. This cycle takes a few weeks.
-They are neither harmful nor destructive, just quite the nuisance in large numbers!
-They are found when temperatures being to lower, since they seek shelter from the cold.

With the lower temperatures, rats may begin to look for shelter in areas around your home, which could lead to a fright! However, there are ways to prevent this from happening!
-Store piles of firewood away from the side of sheds and keep piles off the ground.
-Sealing holes around your home where rats could easily get in.
-When storing food or compost, keep away from areas where rats could chew through. Try to keep food in airtight containers or off the ground.
-Be regular about taking out the trash, or leaving organic material in an area for long periods of time.
Also watch out for the warning signs of rats, such as droppings, added debris/leftover food, greasy trails, damage from gnawing, noises or squeaks, burrow holes, or pets being more active/excitable than usual.

As the leaves change color, and you feel that chill in the air, you may want to be doing the typical autumn activities outside! This could include hiking, corn mazes, pumpkin picking, or a stroll through the woods. However, one thing you should look out for are ticks! Unlike other arachnids or insects, ticks can thrive in the fall temperatures. These parasites feeds on blood, and can latch onto your pets, clothing or other accessories. Ticks love tall grasses, so be sure to check yourself and your loved ones to prevent any unwanted travelers!

Yellowjackets can be identified by their black and yellow striped abdomen, in addition to their narrow ‘waist’. These are social insects, and live in paper-like hives that are made of chewed cellulose. They are different from bees, hornets, or wasps, because they actually consume protein while in the larvae stage. Workers will bring other insects back to the hive for the larvae. They normally are not quick to sting, but can become territorial. Therefore, it is essential that if you see a nest near your home, that you call a professional! At Envirocare, we can remove it quickly and efficiently, giving you peace of mind.
