Invasive species cost the world over $100 billion each year. That’s why we’re psyched that Greg Ruiz, head of our Marine Invasions Lab, is a finalist for a 2021 Service to America Medal!
For over 25 years, Greg has been finding ways to protect local ecosystems, by combating the accidental transport of in ships. Giant cargo ships can carry up to 50,000 tons of ballast water, which they need for stability during their long voyages across the ocean. But ships often unwittingly carry invasive species in that water, which could invade new environments when ships dump their water in their next port.
Ruiz’s research helped trigger the widespread adoption of safer ways to handle ballast water—such as exchanging ballast water in the middle of the ocean, or treating it for potential invaders on board before dumping it out. He also teamed up with the U.S. Coast Guard to create a nationwide system for ships to report how they treat their ballast water, known as the National Ballast Information Clearinghouse. Today nearly two-thirds of ballast water gets treated on board, while the remainder mostly gets exchanged in the open ocean.
“At a time when coastlines worldwide are under threat...we can thank Greg Ruiz for a decades-long effort to decrease the devastating economic impact of nonnative marine organisms," said SERC director Anson "Tuck" Hines.
