In addition to my regular instruction, I also serve as a Civilian Role Player at the Police Training Institute at the University of Illinois. One of today’s scenarios focused on proper firearm carry and storage — open carry, concealed carry, and plain‑view considerations.

During the debrief, a cadet asked a question about concealed carry law. The instructor, knowing I teach this material extensively on the civilian side, asked me to step in and explain it to the group.

It was a small moment, but it meant a lot to have my expertise trusted and relied on. I’m grateful for the chance to support the next generation of officers and to help bridge the gap between civilian and law‑enforcement perspectives on responsible firearm handling.

Today I’m attending the 'Force Encounters Course' from Force Science — a look at how stress, perception, and decision‑making really work during high‑pressure situations.
Even though this course is often taken by law enforcement, the human‑performance science behind it applies directly to the civilian world. Understanding how people think and react under stress helps me teach clearer, safer, and more realistic skills in every class I offer — from CPR to personal safety.
Always learning. Always improving. Always bringing the best back to my students here in Central Illinois.

Yesterday I was teaching a basic pistol class to a group of senior citizens. As we were discussing the law and about when you can be justified in the use of deadly force I asked "We all understand what death is, right?" Someone in the class promptly replied "Trust me, this group knows what death is." 🤣
