Personal Perspective: Strategies that help those overwhelmed by negative news.

From a piece Mikhail published in 2021:
Earlier this year, the Ever Given, a container ship almost as long as the Empire State Building got grounded trying to pass through the Suez Canal. Stuck on a diagonal, the ship was unable to move either forward or backward. Transitioning to a restorative system can sometimes feel like that too. Going back to the old ways is untenable because we already know that those ways failed many of our students, but the way forward to restorative justice can seem
unclear and even perilous because it’s unchartered territory, both logistically and politically. It took 14 tugboats and a team of workers from three different countries to get the Ever Given unstuck. It might take a similar commitment and coordinated effort to philosophically shift how we initiate and create change, to build an infrastructure that supports the new (restorative) values and practices, and to stay the course when the restorative ship gets temporarily stuck.

Opportunity for young folks 18+ interested in restorative justice. This came through email. We don't know any more than what is in the note and flyer below:

Restorative Response Baltimore's (RRB) Young Leaders Network invites all young leaders ages 18+ to attend their inaugural national conference, “Nurturing Disruption: Supporting Innovations Challenging Traditional Approaches” in Baltimore, MD! This two-day conference is designed as a professional development and connection space open to young people involved in child welfare, juvenile justice, community organizing, or youth empowerment across the country. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the Young Leaders Network, meet and learn from fellow changemakers in this work, and collaboratively envision what the future of youth justice and leadership will look like.

All lodging will be covered by YLN. If you’ll be traveling from out-of-state to Baltimore, all will be covered, too.

Mikhail has a new book chapter out: Developing a More Restorative Pedagogy: Aligning Restorative Justice Teaching with Restorative Justice Principles (link in first comment).

The chapter was written as a collaboration with four undergraduate students and is Mikhail's first effort to write about what he does in the classroom. Feedback of any sort is welcome, with particular interest in hearing from folks engaged in similar efforts.

This week, as I continue to work on anger, I am having fun (so to speak) asking myself the ways in which whatever I am angry about is also found within me.

Angry that this person didn't follow through with an agreement? What parts of me do not follow through with agreements (to myself or others)?

Angry that this person changed the mood of a peaceful meeting by crashing in with their irritations and their hurt feelings leaking all over the place? What parts of me do this to others over and over again?

This practice is not a way to turn the other cheek or to turn the blame against myself. I have actually found it to be humbling and quite de-escalating. When I see the shadow from which I want to turn my own face, I feel less agitated and less superior.

What practices do you have to get out of your angry patterns more quickly?
